Yesterday I thought I was doing well in prayer - keeping my focus on God, keeping out stray thoughts, and generally just getting closer to Him. In fact, I was quite pleased with myself for it.
“Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)
Today was a different day...stray thoughts about mundane things everywhere, and when I did manage to get them (briefly) under control, insights into other things came back popping into my head that lead me onto continually thinking about them - things that at any other time would have been welcome and of great value, but during prayer, just seemed to be yet another distraction from Him, to whom I would draw nearer.
Lesson learned (I hope), and all I can say is “have mercy on me, a sinner”.
