On The Way Home

As a child I often walked home from school alone. The house I lived in was one of the smallest in the city. It was located on the low rent side of town. My route home took me past many homes that looked far better than my own. I often dreamed about what it would be like to live in one of those larger homes. I was especially impressed with the two story houses.

One day, a friend from school invited me to his home to play. My friend lived in one of those large, two story homes. We had a fun time sliding down the banister and playing in his upstairs bedroom. The house was everything I expected it to be. It was only lacking one thing – family.

“For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” 2 Corinthians 5:1 (NASB)

As we travel through this life, on our way to our eternal home, we sometimes become enamored with worldly possessions. No matter how comfortable we become with our worldly surroundings, there is always something missing. Those of us who have trusted the Lord will always be longing for that connection to be complete. We will always crave the permanent serenity of our eternal home with the Lord.

“Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— for we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:6-7 (NASB)

It is our faith that carries us through this life on our way home. This faith journey is an important part of our overall maturity – it prepares us for our eternal existence. We should cherish our experience in this life while we look forward to the life to come.

“We are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 5:8 (NASB)

Above all else, on the way home we should seek to please God in every way. Our ultimate goal is to be found worthy when we finally meet him face-to-face.

“Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:9 (NASB)

Every step we take is one step closer to home, one step closer to family, one step closer to our eternal reward.
