Notes On The Book Of Hebrews - Part 2 - Chapters 5-8

We continue this study of the Book of Hebrews with Paul's discussion of Christ as divine Son and as a Priest of Melchizedek.

Notes on the Book of Hebrews Chapters 5-8
  • "In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him..." (Hebrews 5:7-9 English Standard Version). Those who follow the Lord will suffer and in so doing we will learn obedience to the Father as Christ did. We must follow the Lord's lead and go to the Father with our pain so that we may be saved from peril.
  • Christ was appointed as a priest after the order of Melchizedek instead of Aaron. (Hebrews 5:10)
  • We cannot believe upon Christ, fall away and then expect to be restored. (Hebrews 6:5-6). It's interesting that Paul writes this because elsewhere he speaks about turning one over to the devil for the purposes of their ultimate salvation (1 Corinthians 5:5). I think Paul is admonishing believers not to take the Lord's sacrifice lightly and think they can continue in habitual sin with no consequence. The price for our salvation was the blood of Christ and we must honor that.
  • We should treat our faith as a profession and work it diligently: "And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises." (Hebrews 6:11-12 ESV)
  • The priest of Melchizedek is a man out of time. "He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever." (Hebrews 7: 2-3 ESV). It is this priest who blessed Abraham and is superior to him. (Hebrews 7:7)
  • Melchizedek is a priest based on the fact of his eternal life, not through descent (like the Levitical priesthood). (Hebrews 7:16)
  • Christ has no need to offer continual sacrifices because he made the sacrifice himself once and for all. (Hebrews 7:27)
  • Christ is the new covenant replacing the old one from Moses. (Hebrews 8:13)
