My Examen

  1. I'm finally going to start doing an Ignitian Examen, instead of my more basic Examination of Conscience for avoiding sins. Fr. Michael E. Gaitley suggested in his book, 33 Days to Morning Glory: A Do-it-Yourself Retreat in Preparation for Marian Consecration, and I have been planning to do it for sometime now. St. Ignatius designed the examen with the intention of having one focus, more on the blessings one has received, rather than the sins one has committed. An examination based more on blessings than sins, would be very helpful for me, as I have struggled a lot with scrupulosity in the past. I have been wanting to do the Examen for sometime, but keep getting side-tracked, finally after reading of St. Faustina doing the Examen in her Diary, I finally got it together finished my own Examen. My own Examen is based off of Fr. Michael E. Gaitley's version which is presented by the acronym BAKER:

    -Place oneself in the presence of God, usually by making the Sign of the Cross

    -B is for "blessing," we consider the blessings God has given ustoday, and praise and thank Him for them, we should also keep in mind, that these blessings can also be crosses.
    A is for "ask," we ask the Holy Spirit to help us recognize your own sinfulness.
    K is for "kill" that is, the sins that have killed Christ on the cross, and can kill our soul, if we don't resist them. Here, we consider all our sins, we have committed throughout the day, in addition to examining the sins we have committed, we should also look at the circumstances that caused them as well as close calls, and other occasions. We should ask ourselves, what could we have done differently to avoid such acts and occasions.
    E is for "embrace," here we embrace God's Mercy, and call on the Divine Mercy.
    R is for "resolution," haven learn what we can from this Examen, we now make a resolution to do things differently, when we are in that near occasion again.

    Here's my own Examen:

    + Make the sign of the Cross +

    Optional opening meditation

    Psalm 1 (Knox Version)

    Blessed is the man who does not guide his steps by ill counsel, or turn aside where sinners walk, or, where scornful souls gather, sit down to rest; the man whose heart is set on the law of the Lord, on that law, day and night, his thoughts still dwell. He stands firm as a tree planted by running water, ready to yield its fruit when the season comes, not a leaf faded; all that he does will prosper. Not such, not such the wicked; the wicked are like chaff the wind sweeps away. Not for the wicked, when judgement comes, to rise up and plead their cause; sinners will have no part in the reunion of the just. They walk, the just, under the Lord’s protection; the path of the wicked, how soon is it lost to sight!

    Embrace Divine Mercy:

    Psalm 50 Douay-Rheims Version (Optional)

    Unto the end, a psalm of David,
    When Nathan the prophet came to him after he had sinned with Bethsabee.
    Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my iniquity.
    Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
    For I know my iniquity, and my sin is always before me.
    To thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before thee: that thou mayst be justified in thy words and mayst overcome when thou art judged.
    For behold I was conceived in iniquities; and in sins did my mother conceive me.
    For behold thou hast loved truth: the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made manifest to me.
    Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.
    To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness: and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice.
    Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
    Create a clean heart in me, O God: and renew a right spirit within my bowels.
    Cast me not away from thy face; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
    Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and strengthen me with a perfect spirit.
    I will teach the unjust thy ways: and the wicked shall be converted to thee.
    Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall extol thy justice.
    O Lord, thou wilt open my lips: and my mouth shall declare thy praise.
    For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted.
    A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
    Deal favourably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.
    Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: then shall they lay calves upon thy altar.

    Resolution: Consider Options for improvement

    Veni, Creator Spiritus

    COME, Holy Spirit, Creator blest,
    and in our souls take up Thy rest;
    come with Thy grace and heavenly aid
    to fill the hearts which Thou hast made.

    O comforter, to Thee we cry,
    O heavenly gift of God Most High,
    O fount of life and fire of love,
    and sweet anointing from above.

    Thou in Thy sevenfold gifts are known;
    Thou, finger of God's hand we own;
    Thou, promise of the Father, Thou
    Who dost the tongue with power imbue.

    Kindle our sense from above,
    and make our hearts o'erflow with love;
    with patience firm and virtue high
    the weakness of our flesh supply.

    Far from us drive the foe we dread,
    and grant us Thy peace instead;
    so shall we not, with Thee for guide,
    turn from the path of life aside.

    Oh, may Thy grace on us bestow
    the Father and the Son to know;
    and Thee, through endless times confessed,
    of both the eternal Spirit blest.

    Now to the Father and the Son,
    Who rose from death, be glory given,
    with Thou, O Holy Comforter,
    henceforth by all in earth and heaven.

    Ave Maris Stella (Optional) [Added, because it's my favourite prayer]

    HAIL, O Star of the ocean,
    God's own Mother blest,
    ever sinless Virgin,
    gate of heav'nly rest.

    Taking that sweet Ave,
    which from Gabriel came,
    peace confirm within us,
    changing Eva's name.

    Break the sinners' fetters,
    make our blindness day,
    Chase all evils from us,
    for all blessings pray.

    Show thyself a Mother,
    may the Word divine
    born for us thine Infant
    hear our prayers through thine.

    Virgin all excelling,
    mildest of the mild,
    free from guilt preserve us
    meek and undefiled.

    Keep our life all spotless,
    make our way secure
    till we find in Jesus,
    joy for evermore.

    Praise to God the Father,
    honor to the Son,
    in the Holy Spirit,
    be the glory One. Amen.

    Optional closing meditation

    The Last Gospel St. John 1:1-14 Douay-Rheims Version

    In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
    The same was in the beginning with God.
    All things were made by him: and without him was made nothing that was made.
    In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
    And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
    There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
    This man came for a witness, to give testimony of the light, that all men might believe through him.
    He was not the light, but was to give testimony of the light.
    That was the true light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world.
    He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
    He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
    But as many as received him, he gave them power to be made the sons of God, to them that believe in his name.
    Who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
    And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

    + Conclude with the Sign of the Cross +

    Glory to God
