Lecture 2.9 Prefixes

A prefix can be added to the beginning of some words. Adding a prefix changes the meaning of a word.
  • The prefixes un- and dis- both mean not.
Some words starts with a prefix. Adding a prefix before the word changes the meaning of the word. Both prefixes un- and dis- both mean not.

uneven= not even dishonest= not honest

  • The prefixes in- and im- can mean not.
indirect= not direct imperfect= not perfect

The prefixes in- and im- can also mean not.

  • The prefix re- can mean again.
redo= do again repaint= paint again

The prefix re- means again.
  • The prefix pre- means before.
preheat= heat before prepay= pay before

The prefix pre- means before
  • The prefix mis- means wrongly or badly.
mismatch= match wrongly mislead= lead badly

The prefix mis- means wrongly or badly.

  • The prefix over- means too much.
overpay= pay too much. overflow= flow too much

The prefix over- means too much.

  • The prefix under- means too little or below.
undercook= cook too little undershirt= shirt worn below

The prefix under- has two meanings. It can also means too little or below.​
