Leadership Lessons From 1 Samuel 17: Result Commands Respect

Like a wise man said, 'It is results that command respect'!

The impact is what solidifies the position of leadership and gives it the leverage to continue leading with respect and influence.

Leaders without the results their office demands oftentimes are ridiculed, criticised and insulted by the people they lead. That's why in a responsible society where leaders have failed the expectation of their office, the leader resigns without a second thought! It is the last honor of leadership!

Though that concept is strange to us in this part of the world; leaders will rather stay on to the disdain and insults of followers, than resign. It shows how people have come to see leadership as a position of importance rather than that of influence, impact, and result. A man must know when to let go and when to hold on.

A leader who swims against public opinion and sentiment and holds on to power is setting itself up for disdain from the people it leads.

Look at the aftermath of David’s victory over Goliath. In 1 Samuel 18:6-7 when they were coming home from the war the women sang,' Saul has slain his THOUSANDS but David his TEN THOUSAND'.

‘And it came to pass as they came when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing, and dancing, to meet the king, Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of music. 7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul, hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousand. 8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousand, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?

It’s an insult to suggest anyone is better and greater in the land than the king itself. It’s the greatest dishonor to say a rejected boy is greater than the king! But that is the dishonor that comes when leadership does not deliver the result as expected.

In 1 Samuel 18:8 Saul himself knew that when you lose the respect of the led you equally lose your kingdom. He asked, 'they have ascribed to David ten thousand...now what more can he have but the kingdom'.

The kingdom is for those who produce the result and not those who wear title without impact!
