Leadership Lessons From 1 Samuel 17: Integrity

Leaders must lead from the front.

David led the attack on Goliath and the Israelites followed.

"Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron."(1 Samuel 17:51-52 KJV)

The greatest leaders lead not just by words but by example

Paul said 1 Corinthians 11:1, 'Be ye, followers of me, even as I followed Christ'(paraphrase mine)

You cannot make a demand on people that you are not ready to make on yourself.

African leaders don't understand this. In a recession, they ask people to make the sacrifice for hard times while in their budget they make provision for riotous spending on their private lives. Double standard! It is no wonder then that only a few leaders in this clime command the respect that leadership deserves.

It is only through integrity that leadership commands loyalty! The integrity of leadership is what commands the loyalty of the followers.

A leader who has integrity sees to it that his words and actions have alignment. It is this true alignment that provokes commitment from followers! When a leader takes his place in front the followers will follow. However, the moment leadership fails to live up to the integrity of what it demands from followers, it begins to lose its leadership.

In that verse in 1 Samuel 17:51-52 the Bible records that the moment Goliath fell, the Philistines fled! When you lose your integrity as a leader you lose the loyalty of your followers. When leaders fail the integrity test they lose the admiration of the people they lead. In politics, church leadership, economics, we have seen leaders who were once revered becoming despised because they could not lead from the front; they were not the example of the ideals they preached. Time and again their action differs from their words.

But we must be like David whom the scripture testified about as leading people with the INTEGRITY of his heart and DEXTERITY of his hands! (Psalm 78:72)
