Leadership Lessons From 1 Samuel 17: All Your Life Prepares You

And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee." (1 Samuel 17:32-37)

Once David's track record was confirmed his leadership mantle was delivered to him. The king said, "Go ahead"!

Leadership cannot be born in isolation. Leadership is born out of the accumulation of experiences, success, failure and the challenges a would-be leader has passed through all his/her life. Leadership is a daily lifestyle! Every moment of your life is preparing you for the day you will be revealed!

A man's struggles, experiences, challenges, victories are all part of his preparation to lead. Truth is a man exercise leadership or lack of it on a daily basis.

Saul told David, this man has been a man of war from his youth so it is no coincidence he is their leader! He wasn’t their leader because he was tall and huge. No! He was their leader because all his life as a warrior had prepared him for that moment!

David though young rolled out his past success and track record, all of which he believed put him in good stead to fight Goliath. Saul was convinced and so he pushed David into the leadership of the army.

Before we pushed people into a position of leadership we need to know whether their life, lifestyle have prepared them for that moment and that responsibility!

When the replacement for Judas was to be made by the apostles one of the criteria’s taking into consideration was whether his past life has prepared him for that role. So in Acts 1: the demand made was that he must have been a follower right from the time the lord was here.

‘For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishopric let another take. 21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.(Acts 1:20-22)

A life of service is what prepares you for leadership!
