Interesting Facts #51 New Year Celebrations

Until 1753 the UK celebrated New Year's Day on March 25Th. Following the French Revolution A week in France was 10 days long, 10 hours to a day and 100 seconds to a minute, this lasted until 1805. Russia celebrates on the 1st and the 14th of January to include the Julian and the Gregorian calendar. Reykjavik Iceland uses all the profits from the new year fire works sales to fund rescue operations throughout the year. Antarctica hold a music festival each new year called "ice stock". In Akita Japan the adults dress as demons and "scare" naughty children on New Year's Day. Thailand celebrates New Years by holding a country wide state sponsored water fight that can last several days. There is a music composition that is added to each year and will end in 2999 and started in the year 2000 called The Longplayer. North Korea do not recognise any date before 1912, the year of the birth of their founder Kim Il Sung and whilst everyone else celebrates 2021 their "juche" calendar will be celebrating year 110.
