Orange

The word orange didn't appear in the English language until the 14th century. Instead people would describe the colour as yellow-red this is also the reason why people are not described as orange haired but red or ginger. Ginger was in common use during medieval times due to the food spice.

The orange fruit originated around 4000BC in china but is not naturally occurring in the wild as they are actually a hybrid of a Chinese grapefruit and a tangerine. They were actually green in colour and in some parts of the world such as Thailand their species of oranges still is.

There are 400 species of orange and Brazil is the biggest grower of the fruit in the world.

The flowers of an orange tree are white in colour

The word orange by itself does not rhyme with any other English word.

The Spanish word anaranjear means literally to pelt someone with oranges.

It takes 50 glasses of water to grow enough oranges for one glass of juice.

Black box flight recorders are actually orange in colour to make them easier to find in the event of a crash. This is the same reason the lawn mower maker Flymo changed their lawnmower colour from blue to orange in 1977.
