Appeared as the ill fated Kane in Alien ...only he, the crew and the director knew just how gory the chest bursting scene would be. The reactions of the other actors during the scene are genuine.
While setting up for this scene John got very bored and was given his favourite wine and a cigarette to pass the time.
He went on to play the John Merrick in Elephant man, the make up of which took 8 hours to put on and 2 to remove. Due to the strain of filming he only worked alternative days. Incidentally this was to be one of David Lynchs first directing jobs.
He played Winston Smith in 1984 and was the only actor to be considered for the part.
There are many films of note, Adam Suter in v for vendetta, professor Broom in Hell boy, the voice of Aragon in the cartoon of lord of the rings.
Was knighted in 2015 and was the first of oscar nominated actor to play The Doctor in the tv series Dr Who and is also currently the oldest actor to play the part.
