How To Become A Humble Servant Of The Kingdom Of Heaven

In today’s world, just as it has been from the beginning, mankind strives to be first. Even those who you would consider as “non-competitive” compete with others in countless ways. The way of the world teaches and often pushes people to act this way. Think back as far as Cain and Able and you will see the roots of envy, pride, etc. driving actions that are mindboggling. Regrettably, you do not have to look any further than Today’s professed Christians to find the same type of behavior practiced. There are many who make the claim they have “won” countless souls for the Lord as though we are the ones who can win souls. Others find great pride in their well-earned positions such as pastor, teacher, bishop, etc. as though this elevates their status in the kingdom of heaven. Still others actually believe that their local church is somehow better than others are all because they have better teachers, worship groups, or ministry opportunities just to name a few. Yet, in truth, none of this really has anything to do with serving the true kingdom of heaven.

On one occasion, Jesus’ disciples came to Him to ask, “Who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Jesus invited a little child to stand among them. “Truly I tell you,” He said, “unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes a little child like this in My name welcomes Me. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” (Matthew 18:1-6). Shame on those who boast of their lofty position in the “local church” or those who through intellectual prowess believe they are superior in any way to even the least in the kingdom of heaven. Worse yet, many of these same people stand guilty of causing the true brethren to stumble through their manmade traditions, doctrines, and practices.

On a separate occasion later on, the little children were brought to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them and pray for them and the disciples rebuked those who brought them. “But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them! For the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” And after He had placed His hands on them, He went on from there.” (Matthew 19:14-15). Once again, mankind will take it upon themselves to pass judgement on those they feel they have charge over or are superior to. Yet, Jesus makes it a point that He does not desire for us to become bible scholars or overseers of those we feel need our help. He is the Teacher, the Shepherd, the Lord of all those who humbly surrender their lives to serve the kingdom of heaven. Here on earth many “play church” practicing their Christian Religion and all in the name of Christ. Great judgment will come upon their heads on the final day.

Paul wrote to those in Corinth, “Brothers, consider the time of your calling: Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were powerful; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly and despised things of the world, and the things that are not, to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast in His presence. It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God: our righteousness, holiness, and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1:26-31). Stop trying to do the work of the Lord and humble yourselves to allow Him to do His work through you! You are nothing in the kingdom of heaven without Christ, why do you try to take things into your own hands.

On the night of the last supper, a dispute arose among the disciples as to which of them would be considered the greatest. This was after Jesus had taken the time to explain this to them earlier as mentioned above. “So Jesus declared, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority over them call themselves benefactors. But you shall not be like them. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines? But I am among you as the One who serves. You are the ones who have stood by Me in My trials. And I bestow on you a kingdom, just as My Father has bestowed one on Me, so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” (Luke 22:25-30). Therefore, let us be like Jesus and truly humble ourselves to become servants of the kingdom just as He is.
