All Christians together form the body of Christ. Our mission is to follow the teachings of Jesus and spread his love throughout our life. We are each as unique as a snowflake and therefore have specifically different paths to follow. Your detailed list of Jesus-like attributes will be different from mine; nevertheless, there are some general guidelines we can all follow. The world we live in is constantly trying to pull us off track. Taking the time to go over your Jesus-like inventory, will help you to stay the course. The following list is a general summary from which you will need to fill in the details as they apply to your personal walk with Jesus.
Study the Word of God
We are blessed with many ways to study the Word of God these days. You can read the Word directly, read any of the many Bible study books, watch videos of Bible instruction, or attend Bible study classes or groups. How do you stay in the Word?
“It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4 (NASB)
Love God with All Your Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind
Our awesome Creator who sacrificed his Son so that we might live is easy to love. The hard part is keeping our love for God front and center as we struggle through this world. How do you stay focused on your love for God?
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind.” Luke 10:27 (NASB)
Love Your Neighbor as You Love Yourself
This is the essence of our ability to be like Jesus. How we spend each moment of our day in relationship to those around us is a leading indicator of our connection to Jesus. Our main stumbling block is our own selfish desires. When we put ourselves aside and raise the concerns of others to the top of our list, we are on the right path. How do you remain a true servant to those around you?
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12:31 (NASB)
Those three steps are, of course, the core of your effort to be like Jesus – the rest is up to you. How you detail those steps to fit your life is a matter that only you can adequately assess. We each have some additional steps that are more important than others; we each have our own weaknesses that need extra attention; we each have different life circumstances that require a specific focus to meet the standard of Jesus-like behavior.
