He Will Stand!

Friday, January 15, 2010, 7:37 a.m. – I woke to this song in mind:

Forevermore / Newsong

You breathed the word of life to men
And flowing through each pen
It became the written word
Each line, the character of you
Spelling out just who you are
Then you anointed it with power
To go and never fail
The living word giving faith when heard
Forever will prevail

Forevermore, Lord your word will stand
Forevermore, from generation to generation
Never changing because of change
Lord, your word will stand forevermore

God’s love, written in these lines
Not bound by space and time
It remains the Holy Word
Divine, the plan for you and me
Forever it shall be alive
Eternal words of promise
Giving hope to man
Though heaven and earth shall pass away
Forever it will stand

Forevermore, Lord your word will stand
Forevermore, from generation to generation
Never changing because of change
Lord, your word will stand forevermore

Hebrews 1:
The Son Superior to Angels
In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
5For to which of the angels did God ever say,
"You are my Son;
today I have become your Father"? Or again,
"I will be his Father,
and he will be my Son"? 6And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,
"Let all God's angels worship him." 7In speaking of the angels he says,
"He makes his angels winds,
his servants flames of fire." 8But about the Son he says,
"Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever,
and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.
9You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy." 10He also says,
"In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
11They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
12You will roll them up like a robe;
like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,
and your years will never end." 13To which of the angels did God ever say,
"Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet"? 14Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

My Understanding: I had finished reading the book of Romans. I Corinthians was next, yet I had just read it recently for a Bible study I was participating in, so I asked the Lord if he wanted me to read I Corinthians next or if he had another book in the Bible that he wanted me to read. Immediately the book of Hebrews came to mind. As soon as I began to read this first chapter, instantaneously the Lord gave me a connection between this song and this passage of scripture.

As I thought about the word of God and the lines in this song where it states, “Though heaven and earth shall pass away, forever it will stand,” and I also thought about this passage of scripture where it says the same thing about the Lord Jesus Christ, I could not help but have the first chapter of John brought to mind:

John 1:1-18:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.

3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " 16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

Further Understanding: As I thought further about “heaven and earth” passing away but God’s word standing firm forever, and as I thought about the foundations of the earth and the heavens perishing, but Jesus Christ remaining, and how the works of God’s hands (the heavens and the earth) will all wear out like a garment and how God will roll them up like a robe, but how Jesus will not change and his word will not change, for our Lord Jesus Christ, our God, will remain the same forever and his years will never end, I could not help but think about the recent earthquake in Haiti.

This is certainly a picture of the earth passing away; perishing; wearing out like a garment; being rolled up like a robe, etc. Truly the things of this world will all pass away, but God; but Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer; the Word made flesh who was the creator of the universe will never wear out. He will never pass away. He will never be rolled up. He will never change. He will never fail. Forever, He will stand. Forevermore, He will prevail!

Jesus Christ is the living Word of God. He is the exact representation of the character of God the Father. He is the one who spells out who God truly is. Jesus said that if we have seen him, we have seen the Father. He also said that if we truly know the Father, that we will love Him (Jesus). Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God, our Savior and Redeemer is God’s divine plan for you and me. In Him alone are the eternal words of promise that give hope to man. His throne will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of His kingdom.

So, this Word, that will never perish, that will never fail, that will stand for ever and ever, is Jesus Christ, the Son of God the Father Almighty. He is God and he was with God from the beginning and all things were made by him. He is the true light that gives light to every man. And, it is God the Father who calls us to that light. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except by me.” Jesus is not just a way or a truth, he is “the” way and “the” truth and He is the only true life eternal with God. The way to salvation is through him; the way to God the Father and to eternal life in heaven with God is through Jesus Christ.

Jesus died on the cross for our sins, but he didn’t stay dead. He was buried and he remained in the ground 3 days and 3 nights, but then he rose again and ascended into heaven to be with the Father until one day he comes again and he sets up his kingdom here on the earth. John says that “to all who receive him, to those who believe in his name, he gave the right to become children of God… born of God.” When we receive someone and when we believe in the name of someone, we are believing in what he stands for; we are believing in his character; in who he is.

So, to believe in Jesus is to believe in all that he represents and in all that he did for us on the cross by dying for our sins so that we can be free, not only from the penalty of sin, but from bondage to and the control of sin over our lives. The book of I John speaks much of what it means to truly believe in Jesus Christ – forsaking our sin, obeying God’s commands, loving God and loving others, etc. To believe means to put into action in our lives what we say we believe in. This is how we become true children of God – by God’s grace, through faith, which are both gifts from God.
