Regarding Guardian Angels

Matthew
chapter 18 verse 10 is the key passage regarding guardian angels, it could refer to the little children (Matthew 18:3-5) or to those who believe in Him (Matthew 18:6)

10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. —Matthew 18:10 (KJV)

God Assures Us In His Holy Word That Good Angels Help Protect

20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions? 21 Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever. 22 My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt. 23 Then was the king exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God. —Daniel 6:20-23 (KJV)

13 And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan. 14 Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about. 15 And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? 16 And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. 17 And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. —2 Kings 6:13-17 (KJV)

Angels Reveal Information

52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: 53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it. —Acts of the Apostles 7:52-53 (KJV)

11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. 16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. 17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. 18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. 20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season —Luke 1:11-20 (KVJ)

Angels Guide

20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins —Matthew 1:20-21 (KJV)

26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. —Acts of the Apostles 8:26 (KJV)

Angels Provide For

17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation. 19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink. 20 And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. —Genesis 21:17-20 (KJV)

5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. 6 And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. 7 And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee —1 Kings 19:5-7 (KJV)

Angels Minister To Believers In General

14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? —Hebrews 1:14 (KJV)

Does Each Person (Believer) Have An Angel Assigned To Them?

The question is whether each person (or each believer) has an angel assigned to them. In the Old Testament, the nation of Israel had the archangel (Michael) assigned to it.

21 But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince. —Daniel 10:21 (KJV)

1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.—Daniel 12:1 (KJV)

Scripture states, nowhere, that an angel is assigned to an individual (angels were sometimes sent to individuals, but there is no mention of permanent assignment). The Jews fully developed the belief in guardian angels during the time between the Old and New Testament periods. Some early church fathers believed that each person had not only a good angel assigned to them, but a demon as well. The belief in guardian angels has been around for a long time, but there is no explicit scriptural basis for it.

GOD WATCHES OVER US

10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. —Matthew 18:10 (KJV)

The word their is a collective pronoun and refers to the fact that believers are served by angels in general. These angels are pictured as always watching the face of God so as to hear His command to them to help a believer when it is needed.

GOD IS OMNISCIENT AND ANGELS ARE AT HIS DISPOSAL

The angels in this passage do not seem to be guarding a person so much as being attentive to the Father in heaven. The active duty or oversight seems, then, to come more from God than from the angels, which makes perfect sense because God alone is omniscient. God sees every believer at every moment, and He alone knows when one of us needs the intervention of an angel. Because they are continually seeing His face, the angels are at His disposal to help one of His little ones.

GOD USES ANGLES IN MINISTERING TO US

It cannot be emphatically answered from Scripture whether or not each believer has a guardian angel assigned to them. But, God does use angels in ministering to us. It is scriptural to say that He uses them as He uses us.

God in no way needs us or them to accomplish His purposes, but chooses to use us and them nevertheless.

7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. —Hebrews 1:7 (KJV)

In the end, whether or not we have an angel assigned to protect us, we have an even greater assurance from God if we are His children through faith in Christ.

GOD WORKS ALL THINGS TOGETHER FOR GOOD

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified —Romans 8:28-30

JESUS CHIRST WILL NEVER LEAVE US NOR FORSAKE US

5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. 6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me —Hebrews 13:5-6

GOD IS WITH US

Since we have an omniscient, omnipotent, all-loving God with us, does it matter whether or not there is a finite guardian angel protecting us?
