Genesis 15:5 My Shield Is The Lord

In Genesis 15:5 the LORD tell Abram "I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward." Is this not true for all the children of God that place their faith in Him? Was it only true of Abraham? If we were to live our lives with the thinking that God was our protecting shield, would He then allow us to be hurt by something and then tell us "I wasn't your shield. That only applied to Abraham." But isn't it true that God's children are still susceptible to harm and troubles? Yes this is true. Christians are not exempt from these things, but that doesn't mean that God isn't our shield. That shield does not shield us from the doctor's scalpel, or from the dentist's drill. That shield does not keep the nurse's needle from piercing our arm with medicine that will help us. These things may hurt, and we may not like them, but they are for our ultimate good. So too, the troubles that come into our lives are not "shielded" by God, for these troubles are there for our good, Romans 8:28. We may not recognize the good at first (Isaiah 55:8) but they are for our good none the less. "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." James 1:2-4. Patience, complete work, being mature, lacking nothing, are all good things. With this in mind let us live with the thought that God is our shield. Nothing can get to us, unless God judges it to be for our ultimate good. Not only would a good, loving parent protect the child that is trusting in them, but God too will protect the spiritual child that is trusting in Him. He tells us that in such verses as Proverbs 3:5-6; Psalms 37:5; Psalms 27:14 and many others.
