Experiencing The Word: Dullness Of Hearing

All things in the world are held in place by the power of the word! However the word has no benefits until understanding is in place, the understanding of the word is what makes us fruitful in the world. This was the crux of the matter in the parable of the sower which was the focus of our discourse last time. “But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty”.

The key question then is how do we gain access to the understanding of the word? When we go back to the parable of the sower, in verses 11-15 one truth stands out, understanding is not really a function of what you hear! It isn't really a natural process! They hear but didn't understand despite been taught by the master! They have eyes but still could not see! That means that it's much morAHEAD!He answered and said unto them because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them, it is not given. 12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. 13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them."

Paul quoted this same scripture in Acts 28 when he was speaking to the Jews with a bid to win them over to the Lord and the account of this encounter was given thus in verses 23-27.
“And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening. 24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not. 25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, 26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

Some received the word and were converted, transformed, changed inside out while others believed not the word and remained the same. And Paul while explaining the reason for this quoted the same scripture that Jesus quoted in Isaiah and cited the same reason: without understanding there is no spiritual conversion and healing! And spiritual comprehension or understanding is not as a result of lack of physical ears and eyes to hear and see but because of spiritual dullness and blindness!

Where there is spiritual dullness there is no spiritual access to the riches of God stored in the word. This is why Satan’s major assignment when the word is been taught is to put up spiritual blockades in terms of dull hearts and blind eyes, hearts and eyes that cannot access the riches of the word! Ephesians 4:18 puts this in perspective for us, “This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart”

This passage of scripture tells us what the enemy does: to have our understanding darkened so that we can be alienated from the life of God! But from this moment the veil of spiritual darkness that is cast over your mind on any word of God that will bring profit to you is declared torn now! When the veil is torn then we have unlimited access to the blessings and riches of God!
