Disciple of Malice .. or Love's Worth?

Luke 14

25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple

Matthew 10

a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ 37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

The two teachings are one.

It means to be worthy of Jesus is to be his disciple. from the context You can have turbulent family life and be surrounded by people 24/7 .. but all those who go to religious functions (called) are not all disciples of Jesus Christ. (chosen)

To harmonize the two passages remember the number one teaching to love God with your whole being .. and your neighbour as yourself .. see these two highest commandments of the one God as one . and even the second highest is still higher than the ones not of the main two.

So ..

the passage in Luke says .. to hate people to be Jesus' disciple .

the passage in Matthew says .. to not love people more than Jesus to be "worthy" of him. this is in relation to the idolatry command in Exodus .. to have no one else before him . so this is where Luke passage comes in .

So you're going through your day at work .. and you're one of two supervisors .. and this one person always chooses to go to the other supervisor instead of you .. now for a little while it wouldn't bug you .. it means you have more time to do your work .. but after months and months it would seem that because they "always" choose you last over the other person .. that they must hate you ..

The hate described here is on a last emphasis basis, you don't actually hate them as in terms of malice .. but people will feel as though you do . because you put Jesus first .

Quite often i get this reaction when talking about love . and love emphasis . i de-emphasize law .. and the bible if people are using it as if it were a law . and it might seem i hate the bible .. and i hate the law .. but this is not true .. i just understand what is greater . and i always put that first .
