TODAY'S TEXT: For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.(1 Corinthians 14:14-15)
The problem we have with the language of the Spirit is because the mind cannot understand, and because the mind cannot understand our spirit cannot fully cooperates with this level of supernatural operation. Whatever our mind cannot comprehend it contest, whatever our mind cannot deciphers, it question. Being the sense being that we are everything must make sense to us. However the operation of tongues does not make sense, it however connects God and produce results on the earth! Ultimately all of us wants results, and on the results lane, the mind is unfruitful but the spirit is productive!
This is why Paul enjoined us in 1 Corinthians 2:5 "That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God". Faith does not work on the sense lane but on the spiritual lane! Jude when describing the power of praying in the Spirit looked at it from a faith angle, 'Beloved building up yourselves on your most Holy Faith, praying in the Holy Ghost'(Jude 20). When we pray in the spirit we are praying on a spiritual lane that supernaturally enhances the operation of our faith for greater results! At this level of operation the mind is unfruitful but the spirit is productive! And the productivity of the spirit guarantees supernatural results.
When they brought a dead child to us during one of our missionary journey to the eastern part of Nigeria, and the whole choristers were there and passers by watching, the admonition of Paul came to mind that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men but the power of God. What do I do Lord? I carried the child and began to pray in tongues for about five minutes, the whole choristers joined. I was building up myself in my most Holy faith praying in the spirit, even though my mind was unfruitful and struggling. And then I heard an instruction from Genesis 2:7 to breathe into the child, I did, and instantly on the spot the child cough, vomited and came back to life! Hallelujah and all glory to God! In ten minutes a dead child came back to life, the town was agog with joy and God was glorified! The key to this supernatural operation was conducted at that level where the mind was unfruitful, howbeit in the spirit mysteries were been spoken to the effect of the dead child!
Paul says in the text for today that each time he prays in tongues 'my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also'. In other words when I pray in the spirit my mind understands nothing and so what? This won't stop me, for I will pray in my spirit and also pray in my understanding. I will sing in my spirit and I will also sing in my understanding also.
Each time we pray in tongues our spirit is speaking supernatural mysteries of faith at a level that if our mind should comprehend will begin to fight with doubts, anxieties and questions that will not allow the spoken word and mysteries in tongues comes to pass in our lives. Hence the mind is rendered unfruitful most times so that the operation of the Spirit through tongues can work unhindered!
