TODAY’S TEXT: “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover”(Mark 16:17)
The basic body of knowledge in any field of study is always tagged as 101. And so in school, people do ENGLISH 101, MATHEMATIC 101, and every kind of 101 you can think of. If you can’t pass the 101 level you can never move to the 202 level. 101 is no mystery, it suggests the basic understanding and as basic as it is still the foundation on which the height you reach in any particular field of study is built.
This truth became more obvious to me when I begin to go higher in my mathematics class in secondary school. We had a teacher during our junior classes that were more interested in running extra classes after school to make extra money than teaching us during real school time. And so it happens that my foundation, my 101, in mathematics was not solid. By the time I got to the senior classes, it was becoming harder to cope with Mathematics and most especially as a science student how could I make headway without mathematics? Anyway, I just managed to get by, but for how long?
By the time I did my final senior secondary school (college) exams I found out that I barely managed to pass my mathematics with a grade called P7, now the minimum required in that subject is a CREDIT, c6, at the least! The foundational problem has caught up due to a dysfunctional education or teaching at the beginning. Once I was out of school and was planning to retake my exams I searched for a good teaching center with a good mathematics teacher. Soon I discovered all of us in that class had a ‘101’ problem and the teacher discovered this as well. So he took us back to MATHEMATICS 101 and sort out our mathematical structural defects and as soon as that was done we move to mathematics 505 and discovered the mathematics to be simple! Now I wrote another exam and I got a DISTINCTION, A3!
Tongues speaking, praying in the Spirit, been filled with the Spirit of God is basic Christianity 101, and how many of us struggle in life and with life because we ignored the basic lifestyle of victorious Christian living. Jesus speaking in Mark 16:17 tells us, ‘
“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover”
When you are a believer the signs that supposed to be evident in your life are listed here: cast out devils, speak with new tongues, take up serpents, not be hurt by the enemy and healing the sick! Now today these are the signs we expect to see with men called into the fivefold ministry! But hey wait; these signs are not for the fivefold ministry they are the signs that should follow the daily lifestyle of an average believer! You are to heal the sick, cast out devils and pray in tongues for hours! Praying in tongues for hours should not make people see you as a spiritual stalwart; it should be basic Christianity 101!
