The plague of darkness came without warning. As with the earlier plagues, it struck at the Egyptian's worship of false gods. Historian John J. Davis says, "In the light of Egyptian theology and practice, this plague was very significant. To a large degree, it struck at the very heart of Egyptian worship and humbled one of Egypt's gods. The sun god "Ra" was considered one of the greatest blessings in the land of Egypt.
At its heart, the darkness is a sign that Pharaoh had hardened his heart and turned from God. Throughout Scripture, darkness is used to represent sin and distance from God. It is ultimately Jesus Christ, the Light of the World, who frees us from the bondage of sins and brings us into his own amazing light so we can live.
