Have you ever been to a counsellor? Christian or secular? Did it help?
I have been to a secular counsellor maybe 10 times in all. Never to a Christian counsellor though. I am curious to try. If I had spare cash I would try them.
There used to be a lot of stigma attached to seeing a "shrink". Guess that meant "psychiatrist" or "psychologist" but most counsellors have a psychology degree to my knowledge.
Counselling has helped me a little. It most helps me when I see a spiritual connection though.
Forgiveness for instance is essential for not only our mental health but our spiritual health. If we can learn to forgive ourselves, we can learn to forgive others. Perfectionism is an obstacle to growth.
A good counsellor is incredibly valuable. One who helps you see your own blind spots in a tactful way. One who affirms your strengths and gently challenges to go forward. I was contemplating the career myself but cost of further education plus job opportunities became a hurdle not worth negotiating. I ran out of time.
I sometimes wonder how a counsellor feels after seeing maybe 10 or so clients in one day. it must be draining. More exhausting than we can ever imagine.
