Climbing The Mountain

Climbing the Mountain

A small community lived in a valley surrounded by mountains. For centuries, no one had ever left the valley. One day a young man decided to climb the mountains to see what lay beyond. The village elders discouraged him, saying that there was nothing beyond the valley. There never had been, and there never would be. It was always so.

But the young man decided to see for himself. He climbed the mountains and discovered different civilizations which had learned to write, make music, and create beautiful forms of art. When he came back with new visions for his own community, the elders ridiculed him. “You bring back lies,” they told him. “There is nothing beyond this valley. There never has been. There never will be. It was always so.”

What about our own life experience? Are we more like the young man, or more like the elders? What part of our thinking is still stuck in the valley? Are we willing to expand our vision and broaden our minds beyond our ordinary everyday experiences? To experience God’s many wonderful creations and blessings.

Let us pray: “Lord, I don’t always find comfort in taking risks and learning new ways. Yet, you lead me beyond my valley, over the mountains, and into experiences that bring more consciousness, more life. I don’t want to be afraid of growth. May I hunger for it. Amen”.
