John's Baptism Of Repentance - Jesus Baptism Of Holy Spirit

  1. Blog Description

Matt 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
(NOTE: John the Baptist say's Jesus will baptize you with the Holy Ghost)

Col 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision ""made without hands"" in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
(NOTE: The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a SPIRITUAL circumcision/covenant done without hands. Only Christ can baptize (spiritually done/without hands) with the indwelling Holy Spirit (Matt 3:11, Mk 1:1-8 & Lk 3:16)

Deut 30:6 (A) The LORD thy God ""will circumcise thine heart"".

Rom 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and ""circumcision is that of the heart"", ""in the spirit"", and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
(NOTE: God's chosen people undergo a "spiritual circumcision of the heart". Only Christ can preform salvations/sealing baptism with God's indwelling Holy Spirit. (Eph 1:13, 2 Cor 1:22 & Eph 4:30)

John's repeated stated purpose: PREPARE the way of the Lord: Mal 3:1, Matt 3:3, Mk 1:2, Mk 1:3, Lk 3:4.

    John's BAPTISM of REPENTANCE:
Repentance: Strong's Hebrew (H7725:שׁוּב ) turn back, return, a wholehearted turning to God. Note the different way repent translates in Hebrew vs Greek, John wasn't speaking Greek. When John was preaching, turn back/return to God. Is a message only applicable to Jews at that time. Gentiles didn't have any relationship with God, see Eph 2:12)

OT Jewish repentance rituals: rending of garments, wearing sackcloth, sitting in ashes, putting ashes on top of his head, fasting, weeping, wailing. Every Jew at John's baptism was familiar with repentance/turning back to God rituals. (See Joel 2:12-13).

Jn 3:25 there arose a question between some of John's disciples & the Jews about purifying.
    (NOTE: Questions about PURIFYING arose)

Return/turn back to God, PURIFY/wash/clean yourself-up, outside & inside (Jews of Jesus day understood this practice) in PREPARATION of meeting your long time promised Messiah. Through whom will remiss/forgive/pardon your sins will be realized.

Acts 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the ""baptism of repentance"", saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
(NOTE: John the Baptist is sent to preach, the BAPTISM of REPENTANCE. That they should BELIEVE on him that would come after John, that is, on Christ Jesus. Who would remitt/forgive/pardon their sins.)

John's water baptism didn't remove or remiss sin:

The Jew had a sacrificial system that dealt with/covered - NOT REMOVED or FORGAVE SIN. Once a year the High Priest made sacrifices for the whole nation. Anyone could bring a personal (5 different types) sin sacrifice to the Temple. Again, these sacrifices only covered sin & only for 1 yr.

    Water baptism doesn't remiss/pardon/forgive sin, repentance doesn't remiss/pardon sin, obedience doesn't remiss/pardon sin, sabbath observance doesn't remiss/pardon sin, tithing doesn't remiss/pardon sin etc.

Faith & Faith alone, placed in Christ's finished sin redemptive work found in Jesus death (sins required wage PAID) burial (proof Jesus died) & resurrection (the Father's receipt, payment received & accepted). Is the only way anyone's sins are remissed/pardoned/forgiven! All the credit, glory, praise & honor belong, to our great God & Savior, Jesus the Christ!

    John the Baptist proclaimed:

Jn 1:29 John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
(NOTE: Behold the Lamb of God, which TAKES AWAY the sin of the world)

Matt 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
(NOTE: John say's Jesus will baptize you with the Holy Ghost)

    Additional background:

    Levitical law required PREPARATION: PURIFYING/washing/instructions on many occasions. Ex 39:4; 30:19-21; 40:12; Lev 6:27; 13:54, 13:58; 14:8-9; 15:16; 16:4, 16:24; 22:6.

    ABLUTION - JewishEncyclopedia.com jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/338-ablution
There are three kinds of Ablution recognized in biblical and rabbinical law: (1) Washing of the hands, (2) washing of the hands & feet (3) immersion of the whole body in water.

Jacob receives PREPARATION instructions before meeting the Lord at the alter.(Gen 35:1-2
(NOTE: Jacob was to PREPARE/PURIFY/wash-up & change his cloths before meeting the Lord at the alter)

The Lord gives Moses PREPARATION instructions before meeting the Lord (Ex 19:10).
(NOTE: In preparation of meeting me, have the people clean & ready to meet me)

Ex 19:14 (NOTE: Moses carries out the Lords PREPARATION instructions)

    PURIFICATION/washing rituals/ablutions/mikveh examples:

    1) A woman was impure 7 days, starting at the beginning of her menstrual flow & child birth (Lev: 12:2, 15:19, 20-23). During there times, touching her, her bed or anything she had sat on would become unclean until evening. And had to wash their cloths & bath with water. Full mikveh = Jewish ritual purification (where we get baptism today).

    2) Proselyte's = Any gentile wanting to convert to Judaism. Had to agree to adhere to Mosaic Law, bring a sacrifice to the Temple Priest, be circumcised & under go a full (immersion) mikveh = Jewish water purification ritual.

    3) Lev 1:1-12 PREPARATION instructions all Priests: Moses instructs Aaron to full (immersion) mikveh, then anointed him with oil. Aaron becomes High Priest, after the order of Levi (Levitical order)

    4) Every woman was required to undergo full mikveh during her betrothal in preparation for marriage. Except the proposal, undergo full mikveh & wait on her husband to come get her. Was the only thing the bride was required to do.
