I think that is one of the hardest things for Christians to do. The biggest challenge.
Maybe we get to a stage when we think we don't need to repent much. We feel proud of our progress. On one level we are doing well. Going to Church, reading the Bible, not blaspheming, staying away from temptation.
One another level, we are becoming proud, oh so proud.
My life experience has taught me that I easily get complacent and egotistical. I've proved time and again that a fool and his money are soon parted for instance. I fear this trait of mine will also apply to my relationship with God. That I become like the Pharisees, proud and superficial. Like Job's attitude was once described by a commentator "He felt he was holding his part of the bargain, now God had better do His part."
Humility is elusive. Once we think we are humble, we are proud. Proud of our humility. So I'm praying right now, that I stay grounded every day. Lord please keep me on track.
Non Christians will judge us by our actions, not by our words.
