A Call From Somewhere North

At the time, the radio tended to dictate what music was popular, at least that is how it seemed. Compact Discs were still quite expensive, at least brand new. However, I came across a collection of CDs from Christian artists at a second hand shop. This was when I was still too young to have a regular job, so cost was a key factor.

I wasn't quite sure if I would like it, but I bought "40 Acres" by Caedmon's Call because:
1) I liked the name of the band (it "called" to me, ha!)
2) the cover art looked professional but humble
3) and the song titles seemed heartfelt

From wikipedia:
"Caedmon's Call is a contemporary Christian band which fuses traditional folk with world music and alternative rock."

Of course, 40 Acres quickly became one of my favorite albums, and is still to this day.

For example, from the song Somewhere North:

"And you can no more hear me than I can see your face
How I wish it was just you and me

We wouldn't have to talk above the crowd
We wouldn't have to talk so loud"

Being an introvert myself, this resonated with me. So often, crowds just overwhelm me, the sounds drown me, and I just wish I could relax and talk with someone face to face. Going deeper, both with God and with someone special, the song continues:

"I give my life and all I am
But what [do] I have to give
So I hand you a candid photograph of this little boy
'Cause I have nothing to my name
But I can give you that"

A statement that seems to transcend time, though I give all my life and all I have, I just have nothing of value to give. After all else is gone, I can only offer the real me, a snapshot of the person I was, and who I am.

The song ends with:

"My mind's somewhere north of here"

I can only imagine the author's intention, speaking of someone special, so far away, but always present in their mind. I can certainly relate.

Anyone else grow up with the influence of Caedmon's Call?
