1st Corinthians Chapter 13

1st Corinthians Chapter 13

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

There are a lot of manifestations and "works" that the faith displays, but if you have not love .. you have not .. God . it is nothing .

4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;

Reminds me of when Jesus said how long must i suffer this generation? he suffered it long then he suffered for it and all generations .. how kind.

Love does not envy, James speaks of what envy grows into. but love just is, it has no need to be like anyone else.

Love does not parade itself and is not puffed up, so is not boastful or proud, no need of self advertizing, reminds me of how Jesus before his resurrection told the disciples to "not tell anyone" then after said "tell everyone" as the proverb relates .. let not praise come from your lips .. no .. let it come from others .

5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;

Does not behave rudely, is turning over the moneychanger's tables rude? or is it setting his father's house in good order?

Jesus did not seek his own .. he always sought to do what his Father in heaven did .

is not provoked Jesus was not provoked . he answered even deceitful questions with another question .. giving something to consider to the hearers . Jesus was intentional about everything he did . he even said .. i lay down my own life .. no one takes it from me . When sitting in the presence of Pilate reading out the summary of the accusations brought against him .. he was not provoked .. he said nothing .

does not assume the worst of people .. even when Jesus was criticizing the pharisees you can see the compassion in his voice and indicating that he knew they could have better for themselves .. but they chose what they chose .

6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love Does not rejoice in injustice but rejoices in what sets people free, bears all things, trusts in all things, hopes in all things, endures in all things.

8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.

Love remains where everything else .. even the language this passage and internet post is written in .. will vanish away . love is what matters .

9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.

When Jesus returns . there will be no need of written commandments and teachings . because he will be ever present with us . and what is right .. will be ever obvious .. because love engulfs our every experience . the law is summed up by loving your neighbour as yourself .. and is qualified by the fact that love does not harm their neighbour . and in such a world the citizenry surpasses the need of laws .

11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

This perhaps is an allusion to the tongues instructions in the next chapter .. i.e. pray to interpret .

but more specifically, to the things of this world that seem so important, even the religious stuff, Love is the reality that all the sacraments and all the teachings and all the disciplines point to and flow from . when love is grown in you .. when the morning star has risen in your heart . there is no other way of being .

12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.

Now we see God in us vaguely as a bad reflection . but when he returns .. we will see him face to face . during this transition phase we only know in part .. but at the time Jesus returns then we will know as intimately as God already intimately knows us .

13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

These three . Trust, Expectancy, and Love will remain when the former things are neither remembered nor mentioned . and the greatest is love .
