Is Evans Blue a Religious Band?

Before examining the status of Evans Blue as a religious band, it is important to look at what it means to be a religious band. A religious band is a band whose songs are influenced by the beliefs of a particular religious group. One can identify a religious band from the type of songs the band churns out and the beliefs and lifestyle of band members.

In an interview with vocalist Dan Chandler and Loudwire, when asked about what influenced their song “Halo” he stated:

That’s kind of where I was sitting at the time when I wrote this. I was thinking, not to be against a God or necessarily for a God, but just to be angry. I think that’s something you’ve got to go through when you’ve lost something and it sticks with you for so long. It’s just one of those things – you want to be angry, it’s part of the process and maybe these songs are part of my getting over its process. The song has a lot to do with just speaking to God and just saying “I’m mad.” It’s just one of those things, and the thing about it is, I can’t even say that I believe in a God, I’m not saying I do or I don’t, so it’s one of those strange things if I didn’t believe in God, why am I writing the song with that kind of a directive, it doesn’t even make sense.”

The band has not been so expressive of their religious beliefs. Members of the group have not publicly stated if they belong to a religious group or not but we’ve noticed several religious and spiritual elements embedded in their songs. Some of such songs are:

iGod” by Evans Blue

“You won’t be satisfied until you save my life

Questions followed by reasons you’ll pray for me

And how you’ll sacrifice when it’s you who’s lost inside

I’m not your fault

I’m your disease

Here’s to your god

Why? Do you hold back the anger?

Why? Do you hide the insane?

Why? Won’t you channel the rage

And use what your god gave you!”

“End of Me” by Evans Blue

“Growing up to cure diseases only to be buried by one

Then tell them Jesus has his reasons

I know how it must seem to hear these words as a cloud

A depressing and condescending broken record too loud

But they’re my words and thoughts

And I choose to persevere

I refuse to give up

And let the future end here

You took my Halo! Lo! Lo!”

A Cross and a Girl Name Blessed

There’s a pretty girl somewhere with a pretty name

But I could never let you know how much this means

I swear we’ll end this war because we both know

It wasn’t worth fighting for

I wear God’s name up by my wrist

But she might as well tear my skin off

She’s letting go of convictions to release the ghosts inside

To release all the suffering of a cross and a girl

I sing “I love you” way too much

SoI’lll say “I hate you” for tonight “

The Tease

Hold your hands into the sky

Pray for my sin, instead of time

Big cities’ action of my big city girl

Think she builds her heaven

‘Cause she finds it’s a lonesome world

Filled with dirty street cars and dirty signs

I hope there comes a time when

I get to see your dirty mind”
