In my understanding, the Latin word, unicorn, comes from the Greek word, monokeros (literally, "one horn" in both languages) which was a particular type of ox. The animal actually had two horns but it was distinguished from other types of oxes in art by being portrayed with its head to the side so that only one horn was visible (other oxen were shown with their heads turned toward the viewer so that both horns showed).
