I have no links to documents at hand.
But it's the theosphical society which was popular in the elite at the time, and still is.
They made watered down versions for the sheeple, it's called new age.
It's Luciferianism basically.
"You will be like God", evolving to a higher state.
This is where naturalistic and spiritual evolution (could) meet.

It is also where the religions of the world will meet, except for the Christian faith as given in the Bible.

Darwin liked the then still novel ideas, got inspired by it. (most probably).
