paul says there will be, if it is not a literal temple he is talking about then what temple is he talking about?
2 Thess 2:4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God.

I agree with everything said so far. Any temple that is built in the last days will be for the purpose of deception because for everything that God does, Satan has a counterfeit. Also both Paul and Jesus speak of a temple that will exist in the last days. Jesus said that the abomination of desolation that takes place in the temple will be a sign to flee and will usher in the great tribulation that would never be equaled. The belief that this was fulfilled in 70AD makes the Olivet discourse fragmented and incoherent. The Olivet discourse is a concise accurate depiction of the last days from beginning to end and any similarities to the events of 70AD are coincidental showing that history often does repeat itself.

References to the sanctuary and temple are some of the most confusing in all of bible prophecy because there were so many applications. There is the temple in heaven where Jesus ministers as our great high priest that is described in detail in Hebrews and Revelation. There was an earthy sanctuary built by Moses and the more permanent temple that was built by Solomon and Zerubbabel. Lastly, God often refers to his people both individually and collectively as a spiritual temple or city that is filled by the Holy Spirit. Context is the key to knowing what is being described.

All three applications of the temple will be represented in the last days. Jesus will be performing some type of final work or judgment in the temple in heaven where the subjects of his kingdom are made up (Dan. 7 Rev. 11). Satan will restore Jerusalem and build an earthly temple from which to rule and deceive the world into believing he is Jesus here to usher in his 1000 year reign on the throne of David. And finally, God will be building a spiritual temple and city made up of believers with the 144,000 representing the temple and the great multitude representing the holy city.

So we see that there will be lots of building and construction in the last days. Satan will be building an earthly city or capital and God will be building a spiritual city made up of people. The last days will be similar to the book of Acts where the whole world will have to choose whether they want to be part of physical Israel or spiritual Israel.
