Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament law, which means that the purpose of it has passed away. So what did Jesus mean when he said he didnt abolish the law, if the Old Testament law has basically gone away now and has been replaced by the New Covenant?

The purpose of the Law never passes away. It is still the guide for living a life for God. But, the penalty for breaking it has been paid. When God starts to count your transgressions, Jesus will present his perfect life in your place and take the punishment (proactively) that you deserve for your sinful life.

No, not a new Covenant, but a New Testament --that is, Jesus, the Christ of God fulfilled the Law and as the anointed one (Messiah for Israel) He was the REAL sacrifice that the OT showed through their animal sacrifices and the ordinances. One can properly say: Jesus set aside the Law of the OT at the Cross, until the New Covenant is established (note Hebrews 8:6-11 KJV) --which is after the Millennium time. Then Jehovah-God will again rule and guide Israel, while the Lord Jesus takes His Bride --the Church, back home to Heaven (see also 1Cor. 15:20-28 KJV). One should not confuse the Israelite religion with Christianity.

So if the penalties in the Old Covenant dont exist anymore, what does it mean that the Old Covenant isnt abolished?

There are still people living under it. Every Atheist, Jew, Muslim, pagan, and many cultural Christians are not living in Christ. But, even those who are in Christ still live under it, but our penalty for breaking it is paid in full.

think about it. who told you that the penalties don't exist anymore?

do people still die? get sick? hate one another ? toil and sweat? fight? lie? divorce ?

serve other gods ? hurt others even for no reason ?

run red lights ?

So if the penalties in the Old Covenant dont exist anymore, what does it mean that the Old Covenant isnt abolished?

The Old Covenant is either active, or it is fulfilled and superceded.
if it remains active, it cannot be abolished.

some people who are either living or dead, accept that the Old Covenant has been fulfilled by Jesus Christ. For those who believed in and accepted Christ as their Savior, their debit has been paid. They lived by faith (and will be resurrected) under the New Covenant, which in their case superceeds the Old Covenant.

For those living or dead who do not/did not accept that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and who did not/do not accept His fulfillment of the Old Covenant, that same Old covenant remains effective for them, and thus has not been abolished.

None of that has anything to do with the Old Covenant. You're talking about a return to the world before the fall and not the Old Covenant.

How could i possibly be talking about the world before the fall? did people die before the fall? (noo)
did people lie before the fall? (noo)
before the fall, did people get sick? hate one another ? toil and sweat? fight? lie? divorce ?
serve other gods ? hurt others even for no reason ?
ALL NOO ......

AFTER THE FALL, did people die? YES
AFTER THE FALL, did people lie? YES
AFTER THE FALL, did people get sick? hate one another? toil and sweat? fight? divorce? serve other gods? hurt others even for no reason?
ALL YES .....

do most people of the world TODAY, AFTER THE FALL, do all those things?
ALL YES (and abominably worse too!).....

TODAY, the whole world is full of unrepentant sinners willfully and blindly doing whatever they think is right or want to do.......

Did the law against lying go away? NOOO.....
did the law against murder go away? NOOOO.....
did the law against divorce go away? NOOO....
did the law against serving pagan gods go away? NOOOO....
did the law against hating people without cause go away? NOOOO...

is the penalty for sin death? yes.

so , will most of the world die for their sin ? yes.

are there some people who won't die for their sin ? yes.

and THAT is what makes all the difference. THAT is what people need to know.

What so many fail to realize is that there are two laws. Paul referred to is as the letter and spirit of the law. The letter or commandments were abolished at the cross and are no longer binding. The spirit of the law or God's love that is written in the heart is never abolished and is the real commandment that we are required to keep.

'Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.' Rom. 13:10

'For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.' Gal. 5:14

why would you assume that ?

I'm not assuming. I'm asking. Your post implies that people who sin will not be saved.

And we need to keep in mind that we are born in sin by the malady of the Fall in Genesis, and that sinful nature is what must be dealt with --and which Jesus died to accomplish (for all who will receive Him as the sacrifice for their sin nature and sins). Works to do good are only counted good by God if one is "born" of God as a "new creation" in Christ, as God said.

good. the answer is almost a rhetorical question then.....

since the penalty for sin is death,

will unredeemed sinners die for their sin ? (please note the obvious- UNredeemed sinners)

OK. the tone of your post seemed to ignore the redemption of our sins by Christ. I understand what you're saying now.

now that that is accomplished, on purpose the long way to gain better perspective and start to undo any error in thinking,
see
now how the purpose of the old testament law Torah had NOT passed away?

as Jesus says, He did not abolish the Law, and not one jot nor tittle of the Law will pass away even until the earth ends....

the NEW COVENANT can start to be seen (not nearly all at once nor in a short time even, because so much error still remains to be unlearned)..
just watch what happens ...... (probably soon) ....

Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament law, which means that the purpose of it has passed away. So what did Jesus mean when he said he didnt abolish the law, if the Old Testament law has basically gone away now and has been replaced by the New Covenant?

The old covenant law or the Torah has passed away in it's entirety. The only purpose it serves now is a historical one and to show people the wrong way to heaven. It shows what terrible darkness there was in the world prior to the glorious advent of Christ. Anyone who tries to get righteousness out of it in our day has fallen from grace.

Righteousness for Life is found only in and through Messiah Yeshua.

Messiah Yeshua said the Torah will never pass away.

I believe Him and live in Oneness with Him, as it is written.

Understand Torah. It is not a way to obtain Righteousness. It is Good.

No one grasps Torah unless by grace.

Read what Messiah Yeshua says about Torah - do not say it is gone.

He talks plainly about Torah. Simply.

Trouble is, people don't read the Bible to see what is written. What He says. He explains it all very well. Trust Him.

The Torah has most certainly not passed away in its entirety, or even partially for that matter. Open your Bible to page 1 and start reading until you finish Deuteronomy.

Please don't regard a large section of God's word as irrelevant!

Jesus has fulfilled all the requirements of the law and his death was the final sacrifice that God required for the forgiveness of all sin so the penalty for breaking the law doesn't apply to those of us in Christ.

If the old covenant law doesn't exist how will God justly judge the world?
