Oh, and to the OP... I think we use ESV in church. A lot of us use the Concordia NIV Study Bible. Personally, I use the New Geneva Study Bible in NKJV for basic study. NIV or The Message for just reading. And a bunch of parallel Bibles for in-depth study.

When I was visiting my father for his 85th birthday bash, he got out the family Bible. It's a huge old Luther Bible. None of us can read German anymore, of course, but it's always so wonderful to look at and hold. And it's huge and HEAVY.

YA YA---- DAS IST GUT ! !

Ja! Das Bible ist sehr toll. Es ist sehr rictig und gut!

(Yes! The Bible is very great. It is very right/correct and good)

Okay so I'm not the best at German but I'm learning. :)

Anyway.. My church actually uses something not mentioned I don't think. NRSV. (The new revised standard version.) I have a pew Bible of that version and I bought a study NRSV Bible. I love it and it helps me to connect better with the scripture since we use it in church.

I do like the NIV too though. :)

I like the King James translation. However, I use the New King James version one. The original King James is too Norman in it's grammar and spelling. Too much work.

One of my favourite study tools is my Mum's New Testament in Four Versions, by Christianity Today. It has the new testament in King James, Revised Standard, Phillips Modern English (a paraphrase), and the New English Bible. It's forty years old and still very useful.

I always wanted the same for the old testament, but Mum pointed out one afternoon that it would be three times the size. Kind of like a boxed set of Shakespere. Works for me...;)

A few thoughts on the ESV translation. There are many excellent aspects to the translation, but it seems like it is a revision away from being finished - and no, the 2007 revisions will not correct most of these problems.

In many ways it is better than the NIV.

I use a four-version parallel full Bible which has KJV, NIV, NASB, and Amplified. The link shows the "revised"version of the publication, but I have the one before that. It's the whole Bible, not just New Testament, which I find very handy.

I also have an eight-version New Testament which contains the Greek as well... not that I've ever achieved my goal of learnign enough Greek to make it worthwhile. But having all the versions side-by-side is very handy.

There are other parallel editions that might be useful in your study. I find that I like having it in book-form rather than just online, though I probably have access to well over 10 versions online.
