Anew Italian study finds that when people look into each other's eyes for a long period of time, they often experience symptoms of dissociation -- including feelings of detachment from one's body and from reality -- and full-on hallucinations.

I think the key there is possibly the low light level. I've read of a scientist who had people stare at themselves in the mirror, in low light, and they reported the warping of their face into grotesque images. The guy was testing whether it might account for the 'Bloody Mary' myth.
