Water on Mars.

Big deal.

Scientists have been saying it has canals and polar ice caps for years.

What's the hullabaloo all about?
We've discussed the difference between Mars' polar ice fields and 'canals' before. To remind you, the ice caps are actually there, while the canals were a mistaken assumption based on poor quality data (telescopes of the day weren't good).

I'm half tempted to buy you a basic telescope for Christmas, so you can see the ice caps for yourself. But you'd probably tell me to take a hike.

What makes you think I'm disagreeing with science that there is water on Mars?

In fact, one poster here believes it is water from the Flood.

(Another poster here believes it's on Neptune. ;))

We don't know the odds, but we do know that water is a prerequesite for life as we understand it.If water is present, then the odds go up significantly.

It's not a matter of odds. There is no natural law available to cause life to occur.
Assuming there were odds, you'd still need some kind of "push"
for throwing the spaghetti on the wall to see if it sticks.

Funnily enough I was just watching a documentary on the BBC about other life in the universe and they mentioned that equation. If you're implying that it's pretty useless because of all the unknown factors then we are in agreement!

It does at least set out what it is that we need to determine, to be able to work out the probability of life elsewhere. As the years (and centuries) roll by, we'll tick off the variables, bit by bit

Oh, a prophesy!

My point being that we should have come up with one possibility
of a reason life would develop at all. At least one.

malleability
magnetic field
magnetic flux
mass
melting point
moment
momentum
permeability
permittivity
pressure
radiance
solubility
specific heat
resistivity
reflectivity
spin
strength
temperature
tension
thermal conductivity
velocity
viscosity
volume
wave impedance

Did you watch the program Oafman? It was Aliens: the big think. They talked a lot about what gets discussed on here - Miller-Urey experiment, the conditions for life to form, etc, it wasn't exactly in-depth but I enjoyed it.

What's so odd, they showed footage of Miller doing his experiments and it stuck in my mind.

Moving video is the strongest form a persuasion available to marketers outside of a live experience.
An old black and white photo would not have stuck in your mind as well.
Plain text, very little.

A 'reason'? I guess you mean a mechanism for how life might start. Why do you think we should already know that? And there are already a bunch of hypotheses about how life can begin, many of which demand investigation. But what we need to make progress is a data set larger than one. So we need to find evidence of life elsewhere in out galaxy, and we might soon be in a position to do so, as some of the new advanced telescopes come on line.

I downloaded it from iPlayer last night, but haven't watched it yet,

Have you got a point to make? I was merely mentioning a TV program I though Oafman might have watched because he's also from the UK.

BTW: I work in marketing so your patronizing comments are unnecessary.

Sorry if it came out that way, but I also work in marketing
aside from full time sales.

I mean a mechanism for why life should start.
You know, heat equilibrium, conservation of mass,
conservation of energy, or any physical property at all.

absorption

area
brittleness
boiling point
capacitance
color
concentration
density
dielectric constant
ductility
distribution
efficacy
electric charge
electrical conductivity
electrical impedance
electrical resistivity
electric field
electric potential
emission
flexibility
flow rate
fluidity
frequency
inductance
intrinsic impedance
intensity
