As Trinitarians we believe in the pre-existence of Christ as the eternal Word, existing with the Father from eternity past. During the incarnation His spirit had to come down from heaven and enter his earthly body in the womb of Mary. Was that spirit destroyed when He died on the cross. Was their a time when God the Son was truly dead?

He was not "dead" as we think of it. Instead he was separated from the Father and the Holy Spirit and every created being in the entire universe. He experienced the fullness of the second death, but still he was also able to come back to life.

This is a mystery that cannot be fully comprehended.

Well, He is said to have risen from the dead - no one here has ever been there, so I wouldnt argue with this one. So I think He was actually dead - the state of the dead, however, is the one we do not know anything about - so we can only make intelligent guesses - and try to convince others about things that we dont really have any experience in - and lucky we are :)
