In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, it was an Italian characters, and in Grand Theft Auto 3, it was a random white male.

I think if you're going to talk about portrayal of race in video games, the GTA series is not the place to look as it is supposed to be homage to films and stereotypes are taken of all racial and ethnic groups.

Nonetheless, I would look forward to more games where the hero of the game is an average black man.

Oh please....in Half Life 2 the smartest guy in the game was a black nuclear physicist. There are tons of black people in video game who don't act like thugs and there are plenty of white people in video games who do.

Folks, the real problem is that we continue to by this garbage for our children. We are more to blame than the game makers. If ethinic groups want to change their image, don't support negative images. Vote with your wallet. Silence is agreement. All the game makers understand is money. So don't feed there ambitions. Re-inforce to your children and community the positive images and role models you desire them to emulate. Positive influence will breed positve results.
