Immigration set to rise 30 percent more than predicted
Reuters - 42 minutes ago LONDON (Reuters) - The number of people coming to live in Britain each year will be about 30 percent more than previously predicted, official figures suggest
The Office for National Statistics initially estimated the net increase in population due to migration would be 145,000 a year.
But it raised that figure to 190,000 after taking account of the latest data, which included record levels of migration during 2004 and 2005.
The long-term projection, until 2031, was revised as a result also of improved calculation methods.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith announced a toughening of migration rules at this week's Labour Party Conference.
She told delegates a new deal would be signed during the next few days to toughen up checks carried out abroad on passengers travelling to the UK...
