Okay so I've decided I'm voting Labor in the House.

It's the senate that bothers me. We've seen the last term of Howard's and seen what havoc a government with majority in the senate does. Since only half the senate will be re-elected it is likely the Libs will still hold a large number of seats. One would hope that if Labor wins the Libs will not hold the majority in the senate still. Because if that happens the Libs will just wait for the right time and then force a double dissolution.

So I'm thinking...I really want a minor party to hold the balance of power...but do I really want FF, who has rumoured to be making preference deals with Pauline Hanson...or the greens holding that balance of power?

So help me decide.

Are any of those democrats standing re-election. I don't think the democrats will win any seats at all this election. Voting on the right would be different to my political inclinations since I do think I'm a bit of a social democrat. I'm more inclined to vote FF then the Greens but I'd rather vote Labor then FF in that case.

I reckon you should vote for Christian Democrats or Family First because there are currently four Greens and four Democrats in the Senate. Thats way too many from the left.
Democrats are not left. They are the closest thing we have to a Centre party in Australia (interestingly the part of the political spectrum that used to be occupied by the ALP during the Hawke years).

If you are voting Labor, I can't see how Family First or the Christian Democrats would interest you as they are both substantially to the right of Labor.

I think it's a pity that the Democrats are disappearing into obscurity as I think they offer a much better balance of power than the Greens, who are a little too liberal and leftist for my liking. Having said that though I still think they are a better choice than Liberal/National/Family First and all there right-wing cronies.

All four Democrats senators are up for re-election this time around. I think you should have a look at their Senator for Qld, Andrew Bartlett and consider his parliamentary record before discounting him. He has achieved a lot for social justice in Australia (at least prior to the current Government having a Senate majority), and I think it would be sad to lose him.

Let's just hope Qld doesn't return 4 right wing Senators like the last election :(

Democraps are very left IMO and I'm glad they're disappearing. I wouldn't call Liberal, Labor, FF right-wing either. They're the more centrist parties.

Have a look at http://www.politicalcompass.org/aus2007

This is a website independent of any political party, it shows the relative positions of political party polciies for the 2007 Australian Federal Election. Clearly Labor, Liberal, FF, One Nation, Nationals are all right-wing parties.

I'm not sure about that site's analysis. It places Liberal to the right of Family First and One Nation? and the Democrats on the right? What is left if the Democrats are almost as right as Labor?

Vote anything you like in the Senate - EXCEPT the two main parties, otherwise we loose the house and our democratic right to check on the two main parties.
But you don't want to loose your vote: voting for someone who has not much chance to get in, is loosing your vote. Greens and Democrats are a good option. The democrats was a good party and it was only the silly WA senator who nearly destroyed them. Should have left the yound lady as leader.
Whatever we decide, the Senate is very important in this election, because the two main parties will be very close.

Losing your vote? Err....

If no one votes for a party, they don't get funding or support, and they die.

Did you read the explanatory information at the top of the page?

And who is left? Socialist Alliance, and to a lesser extent, The Greens.
