The Spirit Of Service

[Phillipians 2:3]; Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem the other better than themselves.

There is a reward in service to God, for the Bible says, that God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love which you have showed toward his name. However, like there is such a thing as praying amiss, there is also what is called serving amiss. To serve amiss is to serve in the spirit of strife and vainglory. In such a mind, do not expect to receive from God.

What makes glory vain is the audience that a man seeks in his service. Indeed, it is inevitable that we serve with men but many Christians, even while serving with men; serve in the presence of men.
Serving in the presence of men is regardless of whether there are people around you or not. It means that it is possible for a Christian to work in private yet silently sing the melody of 'if only I can be seen doing this'.

The trumpet that a man sounds while doing his alms is not necessarily a physical trumpet. More often than not, it is in the mind. It might be silent yet loud because in the spirit, thoughts can resound louder than words. But ultimately, that spirit on a man is never silent concerning its secret labours. Somehow, they will find an avenue to broadcast it.

God's mind on secrecy and closets is not merely in the sense of privacy to the exclusion of others. The ultimate mind was the personal nature of one's relationship with God. When you understand this, the closet ceases to be a room with a locked door. You will serve with men yet not in the presence of men because God is your ultimate audience.
