The Rev. Al Sharpton and the Confederate Flag? Where?

The Rev. Al Sharpton has just issued a statement criticizing Vice President Dick Cheney since it has been reported to him "by media" that the Vice President's hunting trip Monday is being conducted at the Clove Valley Rod & Gun Club in Union Vale, New York, where, Sharpton alleges, "there is a Confederate Flag hanging at the club."

I do not know this to be true.

In fact, it seems fairly clear that Rev. Sharpton does not know this to be true.

A friend of mine who has been hunting there insists he never saw such a flag hanging there.

How sad. The confederate flag is often used by racists. I hope that Dick Cheney is not a racist. I doubt he is though because one can go hunting at a racist place and still not be a racist themself.

Certainly it's not politically correct for Vice President Cheney to go hunting at a club where the Confederate flag is displayed.

But, on the other hand, considering how good a shot Cheney is, isn't it preferable that he surround himself with racist hunting buddies rather than people of good will?

As evident from the recent story involving a Mexican shop owner, conservatives were up in arms about him displaying the Mexican flag above the American flag on pole. It is "disgraceful" or "disrespectful."

But, choosing not to fly the American flag at all, and replacing it with the Confederate flag, a symbol of a divided country, is somehow not disrespectful? You'd think being more proud of the Confederate flag than the American flag would be a bigger deal to conservatives.

No Civil War battles took place in New York--Gettysburg is about the closest Civil War battleground to upstate NY.

Civil War buffs just don't tend to settle in New York....

The confederate flag is a combonation flag for the States rights(freedom from Federal control) and a symbol for slavery.
Its not conservatives making a big deal about a flag.
Chaney might have hunted at a place that might have flown the confederate flag. But we have many Congressmen that have served in a building with a Confederate flag flying on it. (Some democrats)
So why is it ok, to be in charge of a building with a flag
versus hunting on a property that might have a confederate flag?

Does the lib's need to make everything a mountain, when it is nothing but an ant hill?
I thought they had the 08 elections sewn up?

Update New York is the South of the Northeast. That and New Hampshire.

Southerner here:
Most of the people who care deeply about this issue also care deeply about calling handicapped people "differently-abled" and not letting teachers bring up or discuss religion in any way. The rest of us realize that some people flying it are racist, some are just idiot rednecks, some just think it looks nice, and some actually want a reminder of the fact the South has its own distinct history and heritage.
It was quality entertainment once when a teacher asked students if they were distraught about the prominent position of the confederate flag on some government properties. She seemed to specifically be directing it at the black student. They answer the same as the rest of us, "No, why?"

Also it is called the rebel flag.

Dick Cheney probably is racist. Not that hunting in an area that hangs the rebel flag is any sort of concrete proof for that.
