All is well for the next three years. The couple is seemingly happy, and in love. With the three kids in tow, life is normal for the first time in years. As for Alyssa, she is not his, but the other man's. Richard, being the good man that he is, raises Alyssa as his own.

She has been unhappy for the past year and a half. She begins to grow restless. She hasn't been happy for a while now, for she is a lonely woman that is never satisfied when things in the marriage either go wrong or when she feels taken for granted.

She doesn't handle loneliness and unhappiness well. She meets another man, who makes her happy and takes away the loneliness if only for a little while. She is unhappy with her husband, who notices. Joy then asks for a separation to think things through. It was just an excuse to continue her affair with this third man. After finding out about her deception, Richard
and Joy has a confrontation; he divorces her. Joy discovers that she is pregnant and Richard doesn't believe he is the father of this child. He also manages to find out that Lauren is not his daughter after ordering a paternity test. He is devastated and begins to hate his ex-wife. Custody is joint and he has to pay alimony to a woman who was a serial
cheater with three children by three different men.

Two years go by and Joy and David marry. David, unlike Richard, was not a good man. Gone was the handsome, charming, polite gentleman who swept her off her feet. In truth, David is controlling, abusive, and constantly cheats on her with other women. Police are constantly called to the house and the same thing happens each time. David throws things and beats her. Police is called. Police ask questions. David and Joy deny it.

There is nothing the police can go on and they leave; they think it is just another domestic disturbance. However, there have been a couple of instances where Joy presses charges only to drop them, for she is afraid of him. It is not a good situation for the children.
David dines and romances Joy, hoping she will stay. He apologizes for how he treats her and she continually takes her back. Once they even went to counseling, but obviously that is just a way of making sure she won't leave him.

However tell Richard about the abuse, and he wonders if they are abused by him only for them to deny it, which is true. He has never abused the kids yet they have seen them abuse their mother. Richard had no idea what was going on with his ex-wife. So he files for sole custody of the kids because of the violent situation that they are in. In court, Joy and David deny what is going on and the judge rules in favor of the ex-wife. But Richard
does not give up as he asks the kids what is going on and even hires a private detective to find out all of the details of his ex-wife. He even calls Child Protective Services, who could find nothing wrong. It could become a rather nasty situation, which it does. The custody battle goes on for years before a resolution can be reach and even so, Richard and Joy do not get along. There is no love between them, only bad blood.
