I was just curious the order of the Catholic Church- From Top to bottom how would the order go and where does one start on the ladder. If there is a ladder... What are the functions of each role (Bishop, Cardinal, Priest)etc..

* Bump *

Bumping this up so someone on the weekday crowd might answer.

I've always thought of it as ...

God - the big boss.
Pope - Interprets and reveals Gods orders here on Earth. Leader of the Earthly church.
Cardinals - A great Saint Louis baseball team.
Bishop - In charge of the local parishes and priests. Meets with the Pope every 5 years.
Archbishop. A Bishop in charge of a large urban area. Such as Archbishop Burke. (Rocks.)
Priests - Responsible for the day to day spiritual and earthly matters of the parish.

Hopefully more knowledgeable people will flesh this out.

Pope: Head of the church, he is based at the Vatican. The pope is infallible in defining matters of faith and morals.
Cardinal: Appointed by the pope, 178 cardinals worldwide, including 13 in the U.S., make up the College of Cardinals. As a body, it advises the pope and, on his death, elects a new pope.
Archbishop: An archbishop is a bishop of a main or metropolitan diocese, also called an archdiocese. A cardinal can concurrently hold the title. The U.S. has 45 archbishops.
Bishop: A bishop, like a priest, is ordained to this station. He is a teacher of church doctrine, a priest of sacred worship, and a minister of church government. The U.S. has 290 active bishops, 194 head dioceses.
Priest: An ordained minister who can administer most of the sacraments, including the Eucharist, baptism, and marriage. He can be with a particular religious order or committed to serving a congregation.
Deacon: A transitional deacon is a seminarian studying for the priesthood. A permanent deacon can be married and assists a priest by performing some of the sacraments.

Thanks for you posts

My post to clear some typical misunderstood about CC:

which order?

The more important order is the order of sanctity: it depends only on people, not from their role in the Church: Mary (who was not even a deacon) is the first between the saints. Martyrs are second after Her, and so on..... there are probably many popes in the hell...

An other order is the sacramental one:
Ordained people are divided in:
- bishops: all ugual for ordination, they can be auxiliary bishops, diocesan bishops, archibishops, popes: they are all ugual for this important aspects
- priests (= helpers of bishops)
- deacons
Then there are the 'religious' people, monks and nuns
Then the lay people

The less important order is the one of jurisdiction (=who appoints and guides who): here there is the standard order already listed: Pope, Cardinals, Bishops ,Archbishop, Priests and Deacon, and so on: but that is not very interesting.

Each caholic ld know at least who is his bishop and who is the pope.

And above all, is Christ

first you have the lay person without her and him there is no church

but lets see; this might work better:

First there is JESUS. when HE established the church HE choose Peter to be its head - the first pope; then HE ordained his diciples to be bishops. Later HE added Paul as a bishop. The Bishops got overwelmned and choose decons. Paul ordained Timothy as a priest first then later as a Bishop.

but they are all there to serve JESUS and us (HIS Bride)
