Everyone has to start off small. When I started running, I didn't start off running 5 miles. When I was a kid/teen etc., it was easy to run, but coming back as an adult - not so much. I did the whole walk for 10 minutes, run for 1, walk for 10, run for 1 .. and it took quite some time to where I just ran. It was the same when I started walking for exercise. In fact, I was so terribly upset when I was told to stop running that I stopped doing anything for a while. I quit - gave up - said 'if I can't run, I'm not doing anything.' It was childish, and I did get over it, but by then my muscles had already changed a little, so I would walk on the treadmill for half an hour and be really tired. Now, I can do 2 hours at the highest incline and at a good speed. After 2 hours I'm really bored, lol, even though I read or watch Netflix. But it took a lot of time to build up the leg muscle and the cardiovascular to where I could do that. Everyone should just do what they can do imo. I really believe in this:

I have a Fitbit too, and I think it, or any pedometer, can be really helpful. But they do make me act silly....one night around 11:30pm, I was about to go to sleep but I happened to check and I was about 200 steps short of my goal (we have work incentives to get 10000 steps per day). So I got up and as quietly as I could so as not to wake anyone, I marched around the bedroom watching the steps accumulate on my phone. ...kind of ridiculous in retrospect.

Sounds like your work is a pretty good place for walking!
I have SO done that!! I once went to start a hike with my husband and realized I had forgotten my Fitbit! This was when I had a clip-on - one of the very earliest kind with a kind of "hook" on the back of it. I felt like I couldn't do the hike because I didn't have it to record my exercise, lol. (I did of course do the hike.)

I just synced my Fitbit with my phone this morning and saw that I got 23,999 steps yesterday! If I had seen that last night, I would have been sure to get that extra step to round it up - I can't believe I was 1 off. Too funny. That was 9.39 miles! I have yet to get over the 25,000 step and get my 25k badge.

Today I have a run planned, and I should run to get ready for a race next week, but more critically, I need to get out in the mountains and run. It's one if the best ways for me to process all that's happened at the Pulse nightclub and what it indicates for the future. I'm reading threads here and on FB, and my head is spinning, especially when i think of the world we are creating for our kids, and how i can best help them be ready to bring peace in such a world . So, off to get some peace myself...Mass brought some peace, the tall trees will bring more.

MG, you never back, knee or hip issues with running? Its why a lot of us had to quit.
I have, but I've learned a lot on how to keep them going through supportive mobility exercises, foam rollers, improved form, etc. Ready to Run, a book by Kelly Starrett, is a good source of information on that. Chi running or other methods of fixing running form also help. I find that if I start feeling pain on a run, a small correction in form often fixes it. It requires an annoying amount of vigilance, often retraining a body that's had decades to puck up some bad movement habit . but it's doable.

Most GPs would advise to walk instead of run, as we age. But I admire your persistence to stick at it and find ways around the problem.
I imagine a lot of stretching and yoga type exercises would help. Huge amounts of warming up and warm downs too.

I honestly think that when it comes to exercise and aging, some doctors that have a general practice are a bit conservative regarding running and other exercise and may not be as up to date as a specialist when it comes to sports medicine.
Of course, I take the attitude with my doctor (an ob/gyn) but also a runner, that I'm just going to keep in doing it anyway so I'd appreciate their advice on how to keep the body well maintained.
Warm up, especially an active warm up, really helps. Yoga and lifting are also great tools, as are foam rollers for cool down
I am a 67 model, and my favorite autos are 67 Camaros and GTOs. A well maintained 67 GTO is still a threat at the track or drag strip and looks good doing it :) I think the secret is maintenance!
Of course, I don't own a 67 Camaro or GTO, but I would love to someday!

Good day all! I'm sitting a bit too much today, bit I did a bit of lifting this morning, and am about to take a break to hike a bit when I get done with a hw key for the online class I'm teaching.

I'm also going to look for a cool and motivating video to share here, about a person who was able to make a turn around in their life through yoga and exercise. I think the guy in the video used Diamond Dallas Page Yoga. But no matter what form of exercise you like, this is pretty cool.

Yep that is DDP yoga. I do that. I fell away for a bit as the little man hit two years old. But started again recently.

So, I took my bike, put in the back of our van, and there it sat for the rest of our trip. You should have seen it! It's so pretty and blue, (they call it Waterloo Blue, though it doesn't remind me of Waterloo at all) and totally unridden.

We did get the opportunity for a little exercise on our vacation. We managed a four mile hike in a blistering six hours. Maybe it offset the fish and chips and the many pints we enjoyed as well. When we returned I found I was exactly the same weight as when we left.

Now that my bike is out of the van, I'm attempting to convert myself into a bike commuter. I've started riding my bike to work on some days. I feel so splendidly middle-class and middle aged as I ride my Waterloo Blue bike to work with my helmet, collared shirt, pants, sensible shoes and my lunch tidily tucked away into my little backpack. My new bike allows me to ride upright like a proper gentleman instead of hunched over the front wheel in the warrior pose like some sort of urban ninja.

I have good news to report, the scale this morning reports I have lost 2 pounds, but I suspect that's because I'm a couple quarts low because of the 104 degree heat.

Good news! I miss being a bike commuter, I did that for a few years when I lived in Texas.
My summer running got s bit off track with my parents situation, but this week I think I got it mostly back on track. I guess I'll see tomorrow, today was my first really long run, and tomorrow I'm scheduled to do another, but only about half as long.
We'll see if I can get out of bed :)

I was just thinking that is my first new bike since college, and that one was replaced by my Uncle when my first love, a Motobecane Super Mirage, was stolen out of his garage. That wasn't near the bike my Super Mirage, and every other bike since then has been used or a frankenstein bike made up of components for different bikes. My last bike was too small and a hunk of steel. No fun.

This bike fits and I'm excited again to ride. And it's a beautiful Waterloo blue.

Just saw this cartoon:

bffl74.jpg

I hope this will never happen to me! Today I am feeling my age, after spending a week rushing from one seminar to another with 2000 other people, covering, I'm sure, miles and miles a day, and finishing off with a visit to the Johnson Space Center.

I think that being away from my almost daily water exercise probably made things harder, because water helps older people stay flexible. I must have more arthritis than I previously thought, because the water keeps it at bay.

But I am going to take the plunge as soon as I get home from church. Hallelujah.
