30 Seconds With A Famous Person

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
John 1:14 NIV

On Wednesday this week, Scott picked me up from school, and we went on one of our mini-dates to Starbucks. Three dollars for a cup of coffee is pretty expensive, but when that's all you're paying for a date, it sounds pretty cheap.
We were just in time to get front row parking. As Scott carefully maneuvered our big, green Suburban into the tiny parking space, a dark-headed woman wearing no makeup came out of the store and snaked her way past our car. She looked vaguely familiar, but it took both of us 30 seconds too long to figure out that she was one of our local newscasters. (We still haven't figured out exactly which one she was, but we know she was one.) We made our way into the strong smell of coffee, and the store was still a-buzz that a semi-famous person had been among the ranks.
I noticed four young men in comfortable chairs by the window had gotten up and were still staring hard out the window. Their voices were getting louder, and they were getting more hyped as they jockeyed for a good view.
Hmmm, that's odd, I thought. These guys were cool, tattooed 20-year-olds. The newscaster must have been at least 40, and with no make-up on, she hadn't been much of a looker. So why were they still looking?
I stared out the window with them, wondering how in the world she could still be keeping their attention. And then I saw it. They were not looking at her at all. They hadn't even noticed or cared that she was in the store. They were staring at a classic hot rod with a cool paint job and alloy wheels.
The famous attraction had come and gone, and they had missed it all.
Many of us are that way at Christmas.
We celebrate the entrance of the most important person who has ever lived, yet some of us are too busy ogling at expensive toys and sparkly lights to notice his arrival. Don't be like the thorny soil Jesus talks about in Matthew 13:22 where "the man ... hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful." When you celebrate the "Word becoming Flesh" this holiday, don't become so distracted by the elements of your celebration that you forget who you are celebrating.
Don't miss the most famous person you will ever meet.
