• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I am becoming more and more convinced that the God we Christians believe in is a divine sadist. Why is there so much suffering in the world, so much pain, so much hate? That in spite the gospel almost reaching all four corners of the earth. We Christians often say that we should have a strong faith, to believe that everything happens for a reason, and that God knows best. If that is the case, God is nothing more than a divine sadist, and humankind is nothing more than a source of entertainment and amusement for Him. How else can you look at it?

I feel and think that in a very soon time I will become an atheist altogether. That way, I will not be resentful in putting my life in the hands of a God who takes pleasure in watching his children suffer. I believe that when I stop believing in this nonsense of a loving God completely, I will finally be free.

I have believed in God since I was little. But as I look back it seems like He was never there. That poem, "Footprints on the Sand" has been nothing but a lie. I have come to Him so many times and the suffering and pain has only worsened. My life remains empty and meaningless. Maybe He's too busy, or just doesn't care. If that's the case, then I'll have to stop believing and make my life easier. I really think I'll do much better on my own anyway.

Hey raffster.
I'm not answering to this post to give you any advice or logical explanation as to why God allows so many bad things in our world. There are always moments in our lives when we feel as if a thousand questions are crashing down on us, and no one's there to give answers. I have wondered so many times in my life why God allows children to die from hunger and thirst; why nations are being exploited only for the benefit of other, bigger, and more "useful" nations; why innocent people are being killed through bombs crashing down on their homes while they're sleeping... I've had many sleepless nights, and I also shed tears of anger because I needed to know WHY, but no one would give me a reasonable answer, not even God.
You've probably heard that a hundred times before, but I'm sure that God knows what He does, and He is always in control. Sometimes He allows things to happen that we are incapable to understand with our human mind. That is because our knowledge is finit and our wisdom limited. We all would like to know all the answers to our questions; we all would like to know why God doesn't intervene sometimes. But are you sure you will be able to deal with this kind of knowledge? I bet not. I'm sure God doesn't want us to know everything He does because we don't have enough mental capacity to deal with certain things. A friend told me that sometimes it's a blessing not to know everything. And I have come to believe that whenever I start to doubt in God's love and omnipotence.
I live in a rich and safe country, I have everything in surplus, and I wonder why I was given this wonderful privilege while others die from malnutrition, cold, and pain. I think in that kind of situation I am, I shouldn't think about charging God and questioning His love and power, but learn to see things differently, from another viewpoint. It's certainly not God's fault that wars are raging, and that dryness, famine, and diseases carry off so many people on our earth today. You shouldn't forget that it's not God reigning our world, it's still Satan. He's responsible for all the pain in our world. Of course it would be easy for God to crush Satan with His thumb, but He hasn't done so yet. We don't know why (I don't), but I know the day will come where Jesus will take over this world, and He will reign in justice and peace! Until this day comes, we shouldn't waste our precious, yet short, time on earth with secondary questions that begin with WHY..., but recognize our God-given talents and strength to expand God's kingdom and bring His love to everyone in this world.
I understand you're dissappointed in God because you feel as if He has left you alone in your darkest moments. But I'm telling you that He has not. Try to see all the good things in your life. And you are still alive. Surviving in this world is difficult... and it's even more difficult if you try to survive WITHOUT God. Therefore, I urge you to think over your whole situation in life, your decision to exclude God in your life, and to lead a life that is doomed to nowhere in the end. You grew up with the knowledge of God, you have a great advantage there, unlike those people who grew up in a world full of pain and sorrow without having someone beside them who is able to looke beyond their human borders. Are you really able to let go of your hope and belief in God because you think He's just a player? Let me tell you, He's not a player, and this world is not His playground.
Let me give you one advice, anyway: Do pray! Don't cease to pray! Prayer is so powerful, you have no idea. Even if you don't know how to pray at the moment, try to come before God and just be yourself. You don't have to speak a word, just be ready for God to come into your heart. I've had moments in my life when I wasn't able to speak; I didn't know what to tell God, and I was just sitting beside my bed and waiting. And after some minutes I felt peace flooding my mind and heart. God wants to have your companionship, He wants to be your Dad. He won't be able to show His love to you if you toy with the idea of leaving Him forever. Be open and ready to be touched by God.
You'll be in my prayers.

Friend, you overestimate yourself: For what are you or I compared to God?

For when we speak, we depict our topic in our words; when He speaks, His Word brings all creation forth from the nothingness. When man creates, he chisels statues out of stone; when God creates, he forms man out of the dust. When we paint, we fill our canvas with color; when God paints, the heavens are crowned with glorious rainbows and long-shining starlight. When men die, we bring only grief to our family and friends; when God died, He brought comfort to all those who would accept His loving-kindness.

We are nothing compared to God; He is greater than the galaxies, broader than the universe, brighter than the stars above, and more powerful than any force which we could ever hope to find. As Scripture teaches, “Jehovah is slow to anger, and great in power. And He does not by any means acquit the guilty. Jehovah has His way in the tempest and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, and dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither, and the flower of Lebanon withers. The mountains quake from Him, and the hills melt, and the earth is lifted up from before Him; even the world and all who dwell in it.” (Nahum 1:3-5)

Do you understand the sheer greatness of God? Were He to take His finger and drag it across the earth’s surface in a moment of wrath, there is not a single high mountain or low valley which would be to you a safe refuge; the earth herself would melt before His touch, and you with it! Glory to God that His great power is balanced by His kind heart! We are nothing compared to His power; lower in comparison to Him than any ant is to us. You insult God by mocking Him as you do; for our God is not Sadist, but Savior! He who is greater than the universe, vaster than the expanse beyond the clouds, whose presence fills and upholds the whole of creation, thought it not beneath Himself to take up the mantle of human flesh along with all its weaknesses, that we might be saved.

God’s infinite kindness was displayed in the humble frame of the Incarnation, Jesus Christ; His love in that He who was without sin made Himself to become sin that we might be counted dead in Christ; His power in His conquest of death and the unfading hope He’s offered unto us. You would decry God as wicked, when you see Him through your own sin-tinted windows; you would assault the High Tower of Salvation and offend the Spirit of grace by which you have been saved by calling the Lord God unjust; but “He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does Jehovah require of you but to do justice and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8) God makes no unreasonable requests of men; He demands this and this alone, that “all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 7:12) And yet no man obeys that one simple, golden rule. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

“Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory.” (Romans 9:21-23)

God is God; we are man.
God is the divine Maker; we are the humble clay.
God is the Omnipotent One; you and I are the incompetent ones.

"Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you." (John 15:15-16) Perhaps, friend, you should remember that God's thoughts are as above your thoughts as the heavens are above the earth (Isaiah 55:8-9), and instead of questioning His kindness be contented with calling as many to the friendship of God as you can?

Your brother in the Kingdom of Christ, and fellowman in the Struggle for Sanctification,
Caleb

We need to remember that God is invested in the eternal. We live here as sojourners, travelers in this world not of it. If we see a harm done, an injustice.. are we not suppose to be His answer? God chose to use us.. so if we see starvation, should we not do something? We do not have to right to complain about the horridness of this world, unless we are willing to be a catalyst for change. Because we are His plan to bring salt into this world. To bring love, to bring food, to be a blessing as we come and go.
Why is there so much pain? Because we choose to sin. Why do bad things happen to good people? Because we live in a fallen world. Why does a child breathe moments and an old sinner breathe for decades? Because God is merciful. Is it not more merciful to take this innocent life onto Himself, than expose it to a sinful world? When I question God's wisdom, and His plan.. I remind myself that my life here is not of importance.. my life there with Him is my future. If one man is brought to salvation, an eternal life with HIm.. is not the temporary loss of life here a worthy price? My hope is that every evil done to me, will be turned to good for Him.. This is my sacrifice.. my life with all its pain and scars offered to One who was willing to pay the price for me.

Abandoning faith will not do much to add meaning to your life.
We are called to be lights shining in the darkness. Think about that.
We are a part of this world. Believing in Jesus doesn't remove us from here and place us somewhere else. We're here and we live in all the misery and suffering that accompanies the human life. And we're going to stay here. And we're going to stay in the darkness because we are called to shine in the darkness to the ones suffering around us. Nowhere are we exempt from suffering.
Suffering and adversity builds character. It gives us perspective and allows us to relate to others who suffer. We must rise above our circumstances, shine the love of Jesus on the world around us, and light the way to freedom.
It's our choice what to do with the circumstances presented to us.

I wrote a paper about the problem of evil and why God allows suffering to happen. If you want to look at it, I can email it to you... send me a PM if you want to read it.

I have to contemplate on your replies, but thank you all. I guess my point was God's infinite greatness seemingly dwarfed by the evils of this world. Indeed, with just one thought of His everything could change. So we can reason out all we want, look the other way, or just believe or follow blindly, the truth is if He really cared things ought not to be the way they are.

And you guys should stop blaming the devil for the evils in this world. That just proves that: a. God doesn't have any power and control over his enemy, b. God doesn't care, or c. There is no god. Let's just say for a moment that you are a mighty and compassionate king. There is this serial killer who has taken many innocent lives, causing much suffering. Wouldn't you squash that pest? You would, most likely. So what's God thinking letting his enemy make his children suffer? What kind of God is that?

I read the Bible everyday but it just makes things worse, really. Because if God is Love, what's up with all the hate?

Seems to me like Hate > God.

Live forever? No thanks. Not in this world at least. I'd rather die (and stop existing altogether) than have to keep wondering why so many people think that God is so good, God is great, God is this and that ... when you need Him most He's not there.

Trials, tribulations, tests? What does He gain from all this? From the scope of logic you can only surmise He takes pleasure in seeing His children suffer.

Put yourselves in God's shoes for a moment (and just think simply now), with all your power, won't you take the evils and ills of this world away?

As much as I'd like to think I could do better, I'm sure the world would be much worse with me in the role of God. ;)

I also feel that reaching out to those who need it helps me to better understand the love God has for me. Having my every need looked after would not make me thankful, it would make me selfish simply because I wouldn't understand how blessed I was. Through suffering, both mine and others', I learn about love and am able to spread it to those in need.

I could just brush your questions aside, but when I've struggled with the exact same questions I feel I should share with you the conclusions I have come to. I personally believe that God cries at the pain we feel on earth, that he actually cries his eyes out when he sees it, and that he actually cried in the physical form of Jesus. He weeps so much at the pain we struggle through, and when we turn to him he will carry us and weep with us.

Some people find comfort in a God who has control of everything. I find comfort in a God who will control everything for me, but I have to hand it to him first. I don't believe that God neither causes sin, or has anything to do with sin, it isn't he who causes suffering, for the most part it's man, man giving into sin. Sin in my eyes is linked to the devil, but originates from man, and we can either choose to listen to the devil or to the Lord but not both. We talk about handing our lives over to God, but don't realise that this means that before we dedicate our lives to God, he isn't in control of it, or others, God has supreme power, but chooses not to use it, lest we ask. And we can ask and he can do anything, when we pray.

Will you really be free if you fully believe in a God who takes pleasure in watching his children suffer? I don't know what you've suffered that has hurt you so bad and caused such doubt, but I do feel that the devil has manipulated it to get to you, but I find hope that you actually are struggling to 'be free' of this belief of a loving God. Look inside you're heart, the God you believed in as a child is still there, and he is weeping for you, walking a little distance away, paralell to you, on the sand, trying to reach across the distance with his arms, waiting for you to fully step away from the sin/negative beliefs and go to him in faith, he wont let you fall.

Don't let yourself fall - the fact that you have chosen to write this may be because you are still seeking away out of this and back to the time that you felt a God that loved you, who loved you back. This little bit of faith - can be handed over - if you have the courage to pray one prayer.
"God, please take this tiny bit of hope and faith that I have and make it grow"

If you do this, he will be listening, if you try this, he will hear you and he will answer you. And in time, when your faith has grown just a little, he will heal your heart too - if you have the courage to offer it to him.

Jesus did not die on the cross for you, just for you to walk away now.

All my Love and Prayers to you. x

God is not a sadist he imbued man with free will and the ability to choose his or her path. With free will comes the choice to do wrong and if you act without God then you will make mistakes. Why, because we are man and we are faliable God is the only perfect being and thus we are able to make mistakes. Blaming the wrongs of the world on God is akin to blaming parents for how your life turned out. While they are able to influence you they are not able to make you make the correct choices they can just guide you.

God is love, and wishes the best for us but he can not make the decisions for us. He can warn us as in Gen 2:17 where he warned Adam and Eve to leave the tree of knowledge alone. Though God warned them that they would die if they ate of that tree they still made their choice. God did not stop them because he had given them free will, and like a parent who is forced to watch his children learn a painful lesson God had to let them learn for themselves.

Would you like me to quote and cite every verse in the Bible that spoke about God destroying stuff? From Genesis until Revelation you will find stuff about complete and utter destruction. Let's just start with the story of Noah, if you must. Or are you selectively choosing the Bible passages/verses/chapters that helps you justify your faith and/or belief system as like most Christians?

Look for that passage in Genesis where it said: "God hardened pharoah's heart. So Pharoah refused to let the Hebrews go." Guess what God Almighty did soon after -- all the first born children of Egypt perished. If God is really all about love why didn't He just made the Pharoah a little bit more understanding and just let the Hebrews go?

Destruction seems to be something God is very fond of. It doesn't seem to bother Him that He will destroy what He created, and have no remorse for it. If that's not hate then call me toopid.

So who's not reading the Bible here?

So who's not reading the Bible here?
excuse but I happen to read God's precious Word everyday. God who as you say is such a sadist, hmm, then why did he send Jesus to die for you? Because He loves you!!!!!!!!! I would not say that he is a sadist, you however will be accountable to Him someday for your words. So I would be careful what you do say in this lifetime and get your words and life straight with your creator.

Its unfortunate that the OP has received the usual pat answers to this very important question. Answers like "suffering is due to sin, not God", "who are we to question an infinite God", "All things will work out ok if you trust him".

The fact remains that an all powerful God allows evil, evil that he could prevent it if he wished. There has to be a reason that he doesnt. Free will is part of it. However there are many instance in the bible where God cut across a persons free will. Human sin certainly causes alot of strife, but so do natural disasters.

I believe there are passages in the bible that hint at the reasons. eg Jesus parable of the enemy who sowed weeds amoungst the good seed. The landowner decided not to pull the weeds in case the good plants were damaged. We can summise that God intervening more overtly in this world now would somehow damage the saints. Another "you shall be refined as gold tested in fire". This hints that human character is shaped by suffering; that we are somehow enhanced by strife.

Finally "Will not the judge of the whole world do right?". God is good. If he could provide a better world then he would provide a better world. The one we have, broken as it is, works towards Gods eternal goal.

I can honestly understand the same position as i had before like you, however i found that God is a God of Pure Love. I know that you only see death and pain and misery in this world but these things do not make God a god of sadism , you don't understand the life after death nor the rules of spirituality which result in those things that you see happening here on earth, for instance with that tsunami, why would God allow such a thing, you can find those answers(not kidding you) within this Spiritual Book, called the Cycle of the Soul ,it's a long read but you are definitly at the stadium that you need this information.

raffster..... Why is there so much suffering in the world said:
 I'm convinced that God has guided and protected me. There could have been no other way. And what did not kill me made me stronger. I "turned the other cheek thousands of times." And humbly I must say, that now my blessings send my spirit soaring.

Since what I have learned cannot be taught anywhere, I would be happy to discuss with you and try to help you.

May God bless you as much as He has me.:groupray:
