The more you look into it , the worse it gets. From the BBC:

Pick up a penguin

"Penguins are turning to prostitution. But instead of doing it for money, Antarctic dolly-birds are turning tricks to get rocks off their menfolk.

Stones are essential for penguins to build their nests. A shortage has led to the unorthodox tactics . . ."

There was a study where they were willing to give up juice rewards in exchange for pictures of monkey butts.

There was another study where researchers introduced money. In order to get food, the monkeys had to give "money". Not long after they learned what money did, they started prostituting themselves.

Monkeys also look at inappropriate content and celebrities.

A zoo in China started puting Panda inappropriate content on a flatscreen tv in the Panda exibit so maybe the pandas would finaly get it on. It worked. :)

http://archives.cnn.com/2002/TECH/science/06/27/giant.panda/index.html

article said:
When Didi turned six on Tuesday at the China Giant Panda Breeding and Research Center in Wolong, he sat eyes glued in front of a screen that showed a video of two giant pandas mating, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
"Didi seemed to like his gift immensely," it reported of his coming of age.
...
Early results look promising. Last year, Ximeng in Wolong completed his first natural mating after a long bout of sex education. He is now a father.

I agree. Why on earth would they want to study this anyway?

For the same reason we study geology and the age of the Earth and the stars, history and biology and physics and math and all that other stuff we ask ourselves "Why on Earth do we study this?" when we are in gradeschool.

grooming=foreplay

Thats my take on it.
Humans touch their partner in foreplay. But how do these researchers equate touching with prostitution?

Maybe the researchers need to stop paying for it, and
actually find a willing partner.
I think they might be projecting.
I'm not saying relationships aren't costly, but its different then paying for sex.

Didn't know monkees could do that
Sure they maybe smart but
Have you know what? That is beyond belief.

Not realy. This isn't the first time that primates have been known to do this sort of thing. (And I'm excluding homo sapiens)

This kind of quote makes me sad.

We study it because it helps us learn about societal interactions and developing relationships in the animal world. It also teaches us a little about ourselves.

Frankly anything that increases our understanding of anything can be a positive thing. An increase in knowledge and understanding is something to be celebrated.
