Students return to class after fire destroys school
By Stacey Baca
January 11, 2006 - Dozens of students at the Loop Lab School will return to class for the first time today. Their school was destroyed in the blaze that also consumed the Landmark Pilgrim Baptist Church. Eighty students, from ages 3 to 13, attend the students will now attend class at the St. Paul AME Church at 46th and South Dearborn. As students return to class, the debate continues to build over Governor Rod Blagojevich's controversial pledge

The governor's $1 million pledge to help rebuild Pilgrim Baptist Church is raising concerns about the separation between church and state. The governor says it's legal to use state money to help rebuild certain parts of the church, but critics have some questions.

The South Side building that burned Friday has historical significance not only to the area's African-American Christians but also to the Jewish community. The governor's plan to spend public money to rebuild a school at the site has ignited its own fire.
