What are the differences between the Gifts of the holy spirit and psychic abilities?

What are the most common spiritual gifts that are misinterpreted and misunderstood?

How can we learn to identify the differences of what's at work?

Good question, what is the difference?
I ask from the unbelievers perspective because I have been asked to explain the differences in a way they could understand, but that is also biblical. Tall order, but I think it can be done.

hi cyberlizard - All seers are prophets but not all prophets are seers. Prophets hear then speak while seers prophecies' include what they see.

With all Godly spiritual gifts, it originates from Yahweh. We all know the enemy has counterfeits, thus psychic abilities.

People are naturally drawn to the spiritual. According to Scripture, as believers we're not to involve ourselves with fortune tellers, etc. (Deut 18). An example of this is from Acts 16, the slave girl who was a fortune teller and in this case stated accurate information. v 17 "...These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation." But it was the evil spirits in her that were taunting at Paul so that's why Paul cast them out. But he didn't do it until Yahweh let him know to do it.

Many believe they have discerning of spirits. This type of knowledge has to come directly from Yahweh; otherwise, it's our discernment - not that we don't need it. But we definitely need to be lead by Yahweh instead.

The judgmental prophet from the OT is not for today. I Corinthians 14:1-3 prophecy is for exhortation, edification, and comfort. Exhort can mean to give warnings or advice, or make urgent appeals. As in Acts 11:28-30 a famine is prophesied and they were able to prepare for it. BUT now all prophetic words are done in love - Christian love is most important.

Those who operate in Godly spiritual gifts are often criticized even by those in the church even with Scriptures that support them.

Only Yahweh knows our hearts and the future not the enemy. Personal prophecies were given in the NT. One example is Timothy who was told to make good warfare concerning the words he had received. Then of course there are prophecies that are for the church (meaning the numerous congregations), nations as well.

Yahweh is Spirit and we are drawn to Him. We want the supernatural though some are against it including the Godly supernatural. I'm not saying that every action done by a believer is done under the guidance of the Holy Spirit but we can operate in His spiritual gifts according to Scripture. As believers, we have The Holy Spirit to help us. Since Godly spiritual gifts are from Him then it is one way He aids us.

The origination of the Spirit or spirit from which a person receives the gift.
That is a tough one. I'm sure each will have their own perspective on this, but, IMHO, Love.
Continually seek a deeper relationship with God. Humble ourselves continually and pray for humility. Seek those that sanctify us, rather than charismatic gifts.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit are real. Psychic abilities are not real.

Well, to me they're real but they're from the enemy.

Why the difference between a seer and a prophet? Just my opinion, but Yahweh communicates in lots of different ways. It's like having basically the same accounts in the NT gospels.

1 Thessalonians 5:20
"Despise not prophesyings" and I Cor 14:1 "Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy." Forbid not to Speak in tongues" (1 Cor. 14:39). Rev 19: "...for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."

What are the most common spiritual gifts that are misinterpreted and misunderstood? imo Probably the prophetic and speaking in tongues which covers most of the Godly spiritual gifts such as listed in I Cor 12:8-10.

I find that our attitudes, mindsets, and our spirits play a part in how we view things. We reason things out rather than relying than walking in His spirit, relying on Yahweh to interpret His Holy Scriptures for us, His perspective such as through the discerning of spirits, being given or giving a word of knowledge, a word of wisdom, etc.

This is the difference to me.

True and the rest of that chapter talks about how important it is for us to have love and God's Spirit in our lives. How many evaluations do you see that are done lovingly including my own?
