My wife's thoughts on the subject...

"Nice guys are boring. Jerks are more interesting. We don't like listening to guys whine. When we go on dates with nice guys, all they do is complain, and we end up having to be their therapist, not their date. Jerks typically make a girl feel more protected than a nice guy. We don't want to feel like we have to "protect" the nice guy. Nice guys can be counted on for a shoulder to cry on but not to make us feel protected."

...that's rather discouraging, because I can't imagine there are many guys who would do that on a first date. I think it's more like these girls are sensing an iota of anti-social or less-than-outwardly-confident behavior and making judgment on the guy that he's a wimp or a "nice guy", and moving on.

Which I suppose rules a lot of us out on the spot.

I'm not presumptuous enough to assume I'm a nice guy but I also don't want to be a jerk just to get women either. Good thing I'm called to singleness or else this would drive me crazy.

This thread just sneaked into a graveyard, dug out the dead horse, grappled the dead horse into a pick up truck, drove it back home and commenced beating....
Please.. return the poor soul back to the graveyard and let it be..
